The uptown is an institution in washington dc. It is a old, grand theater in the style that hollywood is founded on. It had big red velvet curtains and a balcony of seats. True, it has gotten a little run down over the years, the seats are not in the best nick, and the floor is usually a little bit too sticky. Still, there is nothing like watching Star Wars or Lawrence of Arabia on that big huge screen.

One of the few theatres in the area that shows non-blockbuster films. They show a good mix of documentaries, foreign, and smaller films. Typically the movies do not stay long at the theatre as they rotate their screenings frequently. If you join their email listing, they often have drawings for free screenings of films on week day evenings. The theatre is a couple of blocks from the Metro Station stop. It is definitely worth a visit if you are movie lover.

They have a very nice selection of aromatherapy oils. I love their hair care products. I'm so glad they have opened a shop at the MCI Center area. I plan to shop there soon. The Georgetown staff is friendly and helpful. The staff greets you with a cup of tea which is very comforting on a cold day out shopping.

Arena Stage produces American classics, as well as new American plays. Every play is top notch, ranging from from monologs, to musicals, to comedy. The cast and production team are professionals who reflect the fact that Arena is the largest non-profit theater in DC. Being based in DC they have some good African American themed plays, including Crowns, which tells the stories of various generations of women via the hats they wear. Crowns was received so well that it has ran, outside of the regular season, for the last two summers.

This Tower Records store is gigantic. It is located near George Washing University on Pennsylvania Avenue. This place has everything but it is sometimes hard to locate what you want because the sales associates are usually busy with one of the many customers that are always in the store. Other than it sometimes being difficult to get in and out of this store quickly, this place is great.

The Dance Place is snuggled along a side street in Brookland, an area near Catholic University, off Rhode Island Avenue in Northeast, that's seen a real estate resurgence. It makes sense, because it's such an interesting area. I like the fact that the Dance Place has been there through all of Brookland's phases. This is a great, small theater for seeing interesting dance companies from all over the country (maybe the globe). Every seat in the house is good, the prices are low and it's so small that you'll have a chance to speak to company members afterward. You'll be able to find parking on the street no more than a block away.

Arena Stage produces some of the best plays in the Washington, DC Area. There are two theatres at Arena Stage, both fairly small so all the tickets are good seats. I watched my first Eugene O'Neill play at this theatre. Lately though, I have not enjoyed the shows quite as much. It is conveniently located by the Waterfront--SEU metro station on the green line, and often half price tickets are available through ticketplace. To view their schedule and other information, please visit http://www.arenastage.org/home1.shtml

This is a brand new movie theater, and it's very nice and clean inside. There's usually a great selection of new releases. It gets crowded, so I recomend buying tickets ahead (try the online Fandango site- you can pick the tickets up at the theater, although there is a service charge). The food is standard movie theater fare.
The theater is at the Chinatown/Gallery Place metro stop. It's in a great area with lots of restaurants and bars, so there's plenty to do before and after the movie. There's a Hagen Daaz and a new Thai restaurant in the same building, and I think there are more shops coming soon.

The Meyer Auditorium shows a new movie twice each week inside the most elegant cineplex possible: a museum on the Mall. The selections are eclectic: Hong Kong classics, Bollywood noir, etc. Frequently, directors or scholars introduce or discuss the movie, though this also invites audience questions, which can be a problem. The seating is stadium style and the seats are fairly comfortable. Though not new, the decor is better than you might expect given that it is absolutely free. They hand out 2 tickets max per person at the auditorium up to 1 hour ahead of each showtime. They're not usually sold out.
