To Whom It May Assist: My name is Erica. In May 2013, I was extremely obese weighing 374 pounds. I decided it was time to take control of my life, my health, my weight. As I embarked on this journey I sought out environments where I can become knowledgeable about Nutrition and Health Care. This is when I found the Washington Institute of Natural Medicine (WINM). After reviewing the site, I immediately enrolled in Holistic Nutrition and Holistic Health Care programs as I felt these programs were exactly what I needed restore normal health and weight. At the time I enrolled I thought I would simply complete these programs and it would help me transform my life. Going to WINM has been so much more for me. I am so grateful to this Institute. Since beginning classes in June I have lost 40lbs. WINM has equipped me with the information I needed to be successful in my journey for weight loss. With the knowledge I obtained from WINM I am sure I will continue to make better choices and lose more weight. I now have a wealth of information about Nutrition and Health Care. During the last three months with WINM it has also sparked an interest and passion for becoming a Health Care professional. Thus I will continue on with the WINM into the Naturopathology program. Additionally, I will take the certification exam through the American Naturopathic and Holistic Association and the American Association of Nutritional Consultants. Instructor Dr. Jen Martinez-Bentley is an amazing woman who has numerous certifications. She is extremely intelligent and very good instructor. I enjoy taking classes with Jen. I've been impressed with the Washington Institute of Natural Medicine ever since discovering them ten years ago. Their growth and development of a dynamic team of practitioners creates an effective menu of choices. Whether a person is seeking to enjoy spa-like treatments and massage, or has specific issues of health, there are qualified practitioners to meet many of the needs of DC residents and those who choose to make the journey to this oasis. I had been experiencing sinus problems, along with inflammation in one of my knees due to an old injury. Robert, who provides manual therapy treated me first. What a wonderful treatment! Had such great relief that I haven't had for a long time! After I expressed my concerns about possibly further injuring my knee by exercising, Robert suggested that I research Tai Chi and Chair Yoga for consideration. I accepted the advise, did my research, chose Chair Yoga to start with and have good results. Minor stress on my knees! I then met with Dr. Victoria Goldsten who specializes in Homeopathy. I get sinus pressure and headaches in the spring and I got tired of taking pain pills. I was talking to a co-worker and she told me about homeopathics and lymphatic drainge massage. For the last two years I had gone to B.K. for acupuncture too relieve joint pains and improve healthy energy flow and circulation and open sinuses from allergies/colds. Ms. Enid Valentive with the Washington Institute of Natural Medicine treated my stress and anxiety with an Acupressure/Reiki/Guided Imagery session. During the session she played relaxing music and burned therapeutic oils. Her session took me to a happy place in my mind which helped me see my self worth. That may sound a little silly but it really is true. She helped me learn how to live my life in a positive way. She helped me let go of negative thoughts and guided me to positive thoughts. Her session was better than going to a psycho-therapist. She created more positive energy than I ever had before with a conventional medical practitioner/psychologist. She is very loving and nurturing, much like a loving unconditional mother. Dr. Goldsten helped me - lymph node repair After having a stress test I was advised to have an angiogram due to the results of the test and family history. Following the procedure I started having pain in the groin area and also my leg gradually got black and blue like it was bruised. After many complaints the doctor finally ordered a CAT scan and a sonogram of the area. The results of the tests revealed that the artery had not healed properly and blood was seeping out which caused the bruising of my leg and also an aneurism had formed. Artery reconstruction surgery was required to remove the aneurism and repair the artery. After the surgery I began to experience severe pain in the surgical area. A MRI was performed and the results showed that the lymph gland was damaged during the reconstruction surgery. It was recommended that I have additional surgery to cauterize the gland to correct the situation. I was told that this was the only way to solve the problem. I did not want to undergo additional corrective surgery so I contacted Dr. Goldsten to see if the lymph gland could be repaired with natural or homeopathic treatment. Dr. Goldsten put me on a professional homeopathic formula designed to heal lymph nodes. Within three weeks the pain was gone. On occasion if I happen to exert myself with excessive walking or exercise I will use the formula to help protect and heal my lymph system.The above MRI also detected fibroids in the uterus. I contacted Dr. Goldsten and started on a remedy directed toward this condition. A short time later I had a pelvic sonogram and was told that they could not see any fibroids. Also in the past, when I had my routine colonoscopy, small polyps would be removed. The next colonoscopy I had after taking homeopathic remedies showed that there was no polyps in the colon. During a stressful time in my life I sought out an intuitive/bodywork practitioner by the name of Enid Valentine. She is a very gifted person. She treated me with an acupressure/reiki session with components of guided imagery. In the session she used her intuitive abilities which helped guide me in my life.
