Woolly Mammoth recently moved into a new space that is ultra hip. The architecture is very cool it almost doesn't feel like a theatre building. The space is small so there's a feeling of intimacy duriing the show. Woolly Mammoth also has tremendous discounts. For example, during the first performace of a new show, it's "pay what you can" - especially great for students and for those who normally wouldn't be able to afford to go. They also offer discounts for those 25 & under. They also have a theatre school.

More
Wonder Graphics isn't unlike the dozen or so other frame shops lining the K Street Corridor. They're not the most expensive place to get a picture framed, nor are they the cheapest. Where they do excel, however, is their card selection. While the walls are lined with frame choices, the middle of the store is taken up with one of downtown's most extensive card selections. I was delighted to disover them after years of stopping at the CVS and Rite Aid to sift over a paltry slection of overpriced hallmark cards. Now when I send a car from Wonder Graphics, it actually seems like I care about the recipient.

the games are not that fun, especially when compared with baseball games or hockey games. It is too much of a spectacle, be it the cheerleaders or the insane mascot breaks. The energy from the crowd is paltry, and the arena staff try to bring it up but nothing works. The team itself is fine, though the tickets are overpriced. Check out the Capitals.

I was never around for the old Nationals, but have heard much about them. Let me tell you, it sure is great having a ball team here. The Nationals are a great team, but the experience of going to a game is even greater. Hot dogs, summer days and night, all of this is the stuff of, well, fantasy. Here's a tip: get the 7 dollar bleacher seats and sneak up to the baseline after the fifth inning or so, just like the kids.

The Washington Mystics is one of the finest WNBA teams in the nation. They play before extremely enthusiastic fans in a state of the art venue: the MCI center. The atmosphere at Mystics games is great, everyone is there to have a great time, and tickets are very well priced for a sporting event!

More
The Washington, DC Film Society offers members a chance to enjoy free sneak preview screenings of quality mainstream, international, and independent films in the DC Metro. There is a membership fee to join, then you get on a email list and once or twice a week you get invited to attend a screening. The screenings are first-come first-serve so you need to show up in advance and wait in line to insure you get into the film. It is very enjoyable to see such a verity of films. Most of the independent/international films are on extremely limited runs, but quite often they are very good quality.

I love Video 2000. It's a small neighborhood spot that makes no attempt to go up against Blockbuster because it's a completely different kind of place. The prices are great and the guy who runs Video 2000 is pretty popular among neighborhood people, who like to hang out here. And while Video 2000 might appear small and a little disorganized, just ask the guy behind the counter for what you're looking for -- he knows the location of everything.

Any time I've been to the Velvet Lounge, I've gone just on a whim or because they're offering one of their free beer nights (check out their website for more info), the music has been good sometimes and bad sometimes. The lounge itself is dark, smoky, and can be claustrophobic, but only for the biggest of showings. Most other times, it's a great place to hang out, grab a drink or two, and maybe discover a pretty good band you never would have heard of otherwise.

More
The uptown is an institution in washington dc. It is a old, grand theater in the style that hollywood is founded on. It had big red velvet curtains and a balcony of seats. True, it has gotten a little run down over the years, the seats are not in the best nick, and the floor is usually a little bit too sticky. Still, there is nothing like watching Star Wars or Lawrence of Arabia on that big huge screen.
