Beadazzled has a couple of locations in the Washington, DC area. The one in DuPont circle is such a neat find for the occasional beader or seasoned jewelry maker. Prices are really reasonable and they offer all the supplies that you would need for your bead project. The staff here know their beads and can suggest the best way to pull a project together. They also sell some pre-made pieces. Definitely check out this store!

I don't shop for fabrics often, but I saw this place on my way to work. Here you can buy pure silks, ribbons, threads, pattersn, luxury fibers, wools, linens, buttons, and such. It seemed like all you would need to sew, except for the sewing machine. :)
I didn't fall in love with any of the fabrics there, but there were some neat ones. The store has a wide selection of textured fabrics.
I went at 1 PM on a weekday and the sales guy was fast and choppy 'cause he had to attend a handful of costumers... so I'm not sure whether he's helpful or nice.

I love a local business that has what you need and nothing more, like the old-time General Store versus today's megaplexes. Sullivan's toy store and art supply store on Wisconsin Ave. is just that. It's the only place I have ever taken my kids to pick out birthday presents for friends (up to about age 12), because it has a fine selection of everything that most parents would find acceptable.
The folks who run it seem to do their best to sort out the good toys that will last from the garbage that clogs the aisles of the big-box stores. They don't carry video games, but most kids aged 0 to about 12 will find just about everything they need. I confess, I did have to go to Toys 'R Us in Rockville the other day to find some Hot Wheels track and loop-the-loop that my 15-year-old needed for a physics project (something about velocity and mass). However, in 15 years of being a mom, I think I can count on one hand the times I've been to that increasingly unpleasant place.
Sullivan's offers free gift wrapping, which can be a real time saver. Can't count how many times we've rushed in there just minutes before someone's party, selected a present and card, paid and got it wrapped, and were out the door. The staff is also very helpful if you are looking for something in particular.
The small art store has a good selection of items for young artists, such as cool pens and pencils, as well as paints and pastels. We have used it for those school projects that involve creating displays on posterboard. Also, they have in stock or can order mats for artwork or photos.

I started going here as a kid (yes, it's been around forever) and have always loved it. They were the first place you could get blue nail polish or black nail polish and different colored hair dye, before it became totally acceptable.
They have a great selection of shoes, and really tight, small women's clothing. They have some nice bags, rings, chokers, etc. A Washington classic.

For a truly unique and high end wedding invitation, you must pass by the written word. They are a beautifully cozy studio located in Dupont Circle in Washington DC (with another location in Berkeley Springs, WV). If you are looking for unique wedding invitations, bridal shower invites, baby announcements, or different cards, go to Written word. They pick out the most gorgeous high quality pieces, really elegant selection. Good local store.

I would never have known this place was here... but wandered into it accidentally a month or so ago. Yesterday I dropped in because I needed to get my mother in law watercolor paintbrushes. I was overwhelmed by the thousands of paint brushes there were... I selected some camel hair ones for her (they were HALF OFF!!! paintbrushes are super expensive... so i was thrilled these were 50% off) but they had mouse hair, sable, etc. you could spend a whole crap load of money here... one paintbrush was 197$. she didn't need that nice of a present... they also had paper, models, all kinds of things. you name the art product,.... they have it there. the people there are really nice too, and they have a discount card you can sign up for, i think it was 25% off, but not off sale things.

I have been to Sullivan's quite a few times and have looked around, as well as a few years ago when I bought quite a few parts for a model rocket there. It is a toy store in the style of old toy stores and thus has a redeeming quality to it. Most of the stuff seems to be of a high quality and the staff are usually quite pleasant. My only gripe is that it is very expensive. This is a side affect of it being a small store, they cannot compete with the buying power of large ones, which is a shame.

I am a huge advocate for stress-relief. A couple of months ago, I went to The Stress Free Zone since the name appealed to me. The outside was very nice and attractive. Inside though, everything did not seem as nice as it had been on the exterior. I felt guilty just leaving, so I went and got a massage. However, the massage was not at all stree-free and in fact gave me pain in my lower back the next day.

Expressions, the women's clothing store in 2000 Penn that's not the Gap, is a kind of strange place. For one thing, they take up two spaces across the hall from each other. As far as I can tell, one area carries more business-like attire while the other carries more evening-wear type clothes, along with shoes. Their window displays always intrigue me, but once I go in, I can rarely find something I'd want to buy. The style is trendy, but it seems like the type of trendy that an older woman would try to pull off when trying to look younger. I keep going back, though, and every once in a while, I find something good.
