The Pope John Paul I I Cultural Center is one of the most wonderful museums in the DC area. A beautiful tribute to a future saint! The Pope John Paul I I Cultural Center features exhibits on the pope's life, a chapel, interactive exhibits on the Catholic faith, and much, much more. Located just blocks from the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, it's a fantastic place for all ages.

The Arboretum, far away from the tourist-laden Nation Mall, is a great place to get away. You can bike, hike, or walk your dog here. Find peace at the Bonsai exhibit. Marvel at the state trees in the State tree grove. There is so much to see here, and the setting is really peaceful. There is a tram-ride (fee) tour of the Arboretum, which is a great way to familiarize yourself with it's offerings.

This is a great place to relax and get away from the bustle of downtown DC. It is a formal garden, and therefore more manicured and structured than the National Arboretum, but it has some cool areas like a rock garden, an arbor, a swimming pool (though I'm not sure if that's allowed anymore!) and some wonderful places to wander, sit and relax. It isn't really the sort of place to thrown down a blanket and nap. Spring is the best; cherry-blossom time is especially good

Several years ago, I had a chance to visit the US Capitol building and was very impressed. I was lucky in that I had a chance to have breakfast there with some congressman, sit on the house floor, ride the underground train which moves between the different capitol buildings, and to sit in on a live debate. While I'm not sure how any of this has changed since 9/11, if given the opportunity, I would really recommend it. It truly gives you a perspective into the way the legislative body works and certainly helps you to appreciate the process.

While in DC, I also had the chance to see the Supreme Court. To be honest, there really isn't a whole lot to it, but it is still great nonetheless. When I went, you were allowed to walk up to the court entrance and look in and in our groups' case, they allowed us to come in and sit down. We also had a chance to explore the building which is actually composed of several levels. Just the mere thought that so many important decisions for this country have been made right in that room makes you feel a sense of wonder. It was certainly one of the most inspiring tours I've done.

This beautiful home, just across the Anacostia from downtown, has a commanding view of DC, which should have made Frederick Douglass proud. Most appealing is the small stone building where he absconded to write; least appealing are the hordes of school kids. Can't they just watch TV? To get a real feel for the neighborhood, which is less grand than in Douglass' day, take the metro and walk. Or just park in their convenient gated parking lot.

It its attempt to be welcoming, especially to kids, the garden is a bit Disneyfied, but it is still a must-see for visitors to the mall. In the winter, especially, the steamy tropical rainforest which serves as the garden's centerpiece is a welcome escape from the cold. They also have some interesting rotating exhibits, usually tied in to some other DC gardening event. Great for families; prepare to have your bag searched and go through a metal detector, though, which can take some time if there is a line.
