Let me begin by saying that my wife and I are very experienced with most of the resterants in the capital district, the good, the bad and the ugly. We eaten in some of the finest establishments in the world. We also know a lot of resterantours and are well aware of how hard it is to be a chef/owner. We both consider the River Street Cafe one of the finest places around. The menu ranges from the simple to the sublime and is always imaginative. The chef changes the offerings regularly, always relying on the freshest of ingrediants, especially the fish selections. If you see the Buffalo Calamari on the menu, it is a MUST order. Another favorite of ours is any fish selection in the brown butter sauce. Any of the sauces are wonderful. The wine list is interesting and well paired with the entrees, consisting of mostly medium priced selections.
George, the chef/owner is a very outgoing, enjoyable conversationalist (when he is not "slammed"), always offering little tidbits he has come across in his travels. Ask him about those hot pepper infused garlics! The rest of the wait staff is attentive and of a good caliber, always friendly. One of the real plusses here is this is THE place to bring guests or clientelle, because you are not rushed through like a herd of cattle. This is the place to enjoy a sunset along the Hudson while sipping an interesting new world wine and catching up with old friends while enjoying a great meal. It's called lesiurly dining folks! Very European.
The fact that you enter through the kitchen, puts one right in the foray and high energy that always accompanies finer eating establishments and bistros. I could just stand and watch a master chef at his craft, flames everywhere, pushing the staff the get the food to the tables. Just one flight up the stairs is a peaceful, simply decorated, quiet dining area that just seems another world for the action below.
We both consider George a good friend and excellent host.
Pros: convenient parking, beautiful view of the Hudson, great food

I had always wondered why there were so many cars in Dante's parking lot. Then I saw the rating for Dante's here on Citysearch and decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised! I've been back several times since and continue to be impressed.

I've only really ordered pizza and wings from Red Front, the wings didn't stand as i remember out but as far as the pizza goes, it never fails. Awesome selection of toppings and cooked perfectly. Square slices are my favorite, but they're not for everyone!
As far as the area is concerned, unless you're waving 100 dollar bills around or have zero sense of personal preservation you'll be just fine.
Pros: Best take out in the south troy/washington park area.

Valenti's Pub offers not only a great atmosphere and great people, but a menu to die for! From great pizza and the best wings in the Capital District, to burgers and italian dishes like Chicken Parm and Manicotti, Valenti's is the place to be.
Later in the evening the tables get put away and the dance floor is open while the area's best DJ's play whatever you request, or a great band sings and plays the night away.
Always a great time!!!
Pros: great food, great prices, great people

We went here on the recommendation of a friend. I have to say it's the BEST indian food I've had in the capitol district. The best...! We've been there for dinner twice now and are getting ready to try out the lunch buffet as I type.
If you're looking for indian food in or around Troy NY... check out shalimar on Fulton Street.
-Don
Pros: reasonable price3s and excellent food
Cons: the interior is nothing special. You don't feel like you're in a nice establishment. They should renovate the interior... paint it allnew window treatmentsnew tables & chairs and so forth. That would make it really nice.

While in the area for the Saratoga races, I happened upon this restaurant. Reminded me of both the English and Irish Pubs I visited over the years in Europe with friendly and courteous staff. From the very unique menu I choose Nannies Chicken and Biscuits, three cheers to nanny and the chef, it was not only delicious but the serving size was more than I could finish. My partner, who proclaims to be a burger aficionado, had "the best burger in town" and wholeheartedly agreed. I chose the Cider on tap, which was surprisingly delicious and my partner had a hard time narrowing down a choice, but went with Blue Point Hoptical Illusion and was not disappointed. We will definitely return to Holmes and Watson during the 2009 Meet.

Pros: wonderful Courtyard
Cons: would recommend reservatons for 5 or more

This store has a huge selection of beverages. Although most are beer, there are some sodas and other non-alcoholic beverages. If they don't have it on the floor there is a good chance they have it in the back, which is what we had to do once. It was really cold too. Excellent for a quick run to the store on game nights!

When we were in our apartment we had to park on the street. One fo the downfalls was snow plows. One of them broke to drivers side mirror and we needed to get it replaced, so we went to Quality Glass. They told us they could do it right awaya nd to go have a coffee at the local conveneince store. When we got back, the old broken mirror was gone and a new one was in place. The cost was only $10 for the work. EXCELLENT Price.

This is my favorite place to celebrate a triumph or drown a defeat. Enjoy tasty beers, the very best burgers, hot fries, spicy wings... or the comfort of a hot open-faced turkey sandwich with real mashed potatoes, homemade gravy, and cranberry sauce. It has a neighborhood feel and appeal. The ladies' room could use some updating, but the building has character. I have heard that the desserts are all homemade, but I'm always too full to try one. They're closed on Mondays, and if you want to eat quickly you'll want to get in before the drinking crowd on Thurs, Fri and Sat. Enjoy the bar ambiance... the only thing that's really changed in 15 years is the smoking ban!
Pros: Burgers, real mashed potatoes and turkey gravy, good service
