The Scene
Nestled in the cute street-that-time-forgot district of David Island, 220 East beckons with a cheery turquoise-and-grape awning. Dine out front at one of the handful of tables on the patio, or inside at one of the deep-green booths. Either way, most tables are full of Islanders and pilgrims from elsewhere in the Bay Area, eager for a friendly face and a fairly priced, unfussy meal.

The Food
It often gets top honors in serious burger discussions--the Blue Moo being the standout, with its molten mantle of blue cheese crumbles gussying up the chubby half-pounder. Not everything is a smash (an abundance of blackening spices on desiccated pot stickers), but the kitchen hits its stride with solid American dishes: straightforward, tender filet mignon or flourless chocolate cake so dense you could use it as a paperweight. It loses a little steam with Asian-influenced dishes: Thai cobb salad with everything plus the kitchen sink swathed in too-sweet peanut sauce or a chicken stir-fry with limp veggies.
