Point Defiance park is simply an amazing oasis in Tacoma. The trails that crisscross the park offer an amazing variety of terrain with beatiful views and walks through old growth forest. The 5 Mile Drive is an enjoyable biking route, especially on Saturday mornings when it is closed to cars. Owen Beach is somewhat of a teen hangout, but if you hike north out towards the point there is a lot of great wild shoreline too see including some awesome clay bluffs. At low tide you can hike all the way around the point. This park is one of my favorite places in the world.

The Centre at Norpoint is just wonderful. It has a huge selection of classes and activities for the whole family from swimming to working out.Kids as young as just a few months old can take "swimming" classes. The prizes are pretty reasonable and the staff is always friendly and helpful. They have a preschool program and offer a babysitting service while you work out. The parking lot is huge and it is always easy to get a parking spot.

The Kobetich Library is a great library although a little small. The hours are pretty good, they are closed on
Sunday and Mondays. The staff is very nice too. They have small children's section, with a table, chairs and some wooden puzzles to keep little one busy while you look at their selection. You can keep books for 3 weeks and you can rent movies for free for 2 days. They also offer a summer reading program where kids can earn prizes and free tickets to the zoo for reading books.

Outdoor pools are a bit of a rarity in the Pacific Northwest. Thank goodness for the Titlow Pool, part of the MetroParks Tacoma pool system. The pool, located in Tacoma's west end, is open annually from mid-June to the end of August. The outdoor, Olympic size, 50-meter pool, has a minimum depth of 3 feet and a maximum depth of 10 feet. There's a separate wading pool for little kids and lap lanes are open during all "open swim" times. It's clean, lifeguards maintain control, and shower facilities are adequate. A single swim for an adult is $3.50 (2.50 for kids 5 to 17). Punch cards are available at a savings.
