This is a non-profit art house theater staffed partially by volunteers in downtown Tacoma. The ticket and concession prices are a little cheaper than commercial movie theaters, and the selection usually includes movies you can't find anywhere else in the Tacoma area. Sometimes they have midnight movies or special events, like a special run of Hitchcock movies.

OK, the seats are lousy, nothing looks slick, clean and new, no big THXsound system and the concession stand is, well, limited. BUT you'll find the kind of independent film showing here that you'll never see at your local multiplex. And even when something does have giant crossover appeal, it's much cooler to see it at The Grand, in my opinion. There's just a great, community feel there. Become a member -- at the lowest level you pay $40 and get two free passes plus $1 every ticket you buy for a year, discounts, pre-sales etc. Well worth it to support independent cinema in Tacoma!

Really cool arthouse cinema right here in Tacoma. The Grand is run in large part by volunteers who have a vested interest in keeping an independent film venue open in Tacoma. The Grand usually plays about 3 movies at a time, plus special film series and late-night "classics" (and by classic I mean cult classic sorta classic). Fun smaller screens, but people really pack it in since otherwise they'd be driving to Seattle to see these movies. Prices are actually lower than the big chains, and as a bonus for those getting edumacated, there are student discounts. Note: there is a dance studio in the same building, so sometimes there are noise-bleed problems... Also, sometimes they keep movies for way too long (such as Sideways), but others are gone before you have a chance to go...
