The Care was Good, but they suck the life out of their patients with billing. 3/13/2019

The Care was Good, but they suck the life out of their patients with billing. When we go to a nonprofit hospital, we pay our facility bill, and then usually we have a follow-up bill, and typically these both equal $200 with our insurance. However, this is obviously a private hospital that is for-profit, as they continue to bill us for everything possible, even after accepting a ton of money for my insurance company. I kid you not, I’m getting a new bill each week, and the total has been $1000 out of my pocket, in addition to the thousands that they have gotten for my insurance. Other hospitals that have gone to that were nonprofit, took the facility fee, and we received a bill later, but it was nothing like what has happened here at Trident/ Summerville Medical Center. I’m literally going to go broke because they are greedy, they seriously need to consider accepting insurance money, and then writing off the balance as I will never go here again. Summerville Medical Center/Trident medical facilities is the perfect example of what is wrong with our healthcare system. more

Don't go 2/21/2017

I transported my fiance to summerville medical center ER on 2/14/17 due to sharp, sudden onset of a headache that he rated as 10/10 pain. His pupils were constricted and speech was slurred. Blood pressure was 170/100. When we arrived, he couldn't walk and I had to transfer him to a wheelchair and push him inside. I explained to the emergency room staff what was going on and they insisted on checking him in before allowing a doctor to assess him. I was understanding of this. However, after the initial assessment, they told us to sit in the waiting room to see the triage nurse. After a few minutes, I stopped a staff member and asked to see the triage nurse. They consulted the triage nurse and assured me that my fiance would be seen next. Another couple of minutes passed and the triage nurse called a different patient to the room. I am a medical professional and knew his symptoms were those of a stroke, so I spoke up. I stopped the triage nurse, explained that he needed to be seen by a doctor right away. I was told we needed to wait our turn. I went on to argue that he could be having a brain bleed and needed a neurological assessment, but my complaints fell on deaf ears. We left summerville and went to Trident ER. He was seen immediately there, given the appropriate testing and was checked in over night. He's been diagnosed as having had a TIA, or "mini stroke". I am sure that emergency care depends largely on the staff on duty when you arrive, but summerville seriously needs to provide better training to their staff. A stroke certified emergency department should have recognized his symptoms and had him immediately taken to the back to see a doctor. I have not been able to recommend summerville medical center to my patients since this event, nor would I feel confident seeking care there for myself or my loved ones. more

A Nice Small Hospital 9/8/2006

My daughter was born at Summerville Medical Center and at first I was not pleased, but it was only because I had a bad nurse. After she left, things got better. Summerville Medical is part of Trident Medical. I liked Summerville because it was small, clean, and not busy! The Maternity Ward is very nice and the nurses are pretty lenient on after hours visitors. more

long wait in the ER, otherwise ok 9/11/2005

My only experience with the Summerville Hospital is in the ER on a Friday night. We got there about 10 and ended up not getting out until about 4 am. My son needed stitches or we would have left long earlier. They were nice enough but it was so slow. I know now to drive on to Chareston or West Ashley if we have another emergency. Nothing wrong with them, but I think that wait is unacceptable. During the day, they might be much better........I'm not sure. more
