Just got back and i am in heaven. I have never had any fish of such a high quailty. Sit at the bar and omakase. Master Nozawa chooses everything for you. The person next to me tried to make a request and he was served his bill. Master Nozawa is an extremely kind man and an expert chef. He kept the resaurant open late for us and gave us shashimi on the house. He explained to me how all the other LA resaurants follow him to the market buying everything he does. He specializes in white fish, especially red snapper, but treated us with some orgasmic eel. The sushi is simple featuring the natural textures and tastes of his ultra superior fish. With tip and tax, I paid seventy dollars for nine dishes - a great deal anywhere. TRUST ME - this place is the bomb.
Pros: value, quality, friendliness
Cons: small space, ruins all other sushi

My husband and I are serious sushi lovers and go about once a week so we finally decided to try after hearing and reading so much about this place. We didn't expect much going in considering the reviews about bad/lack of service, the sushi "Nazi", a long wait, and pricey cost.
We just wanted to find out if this sushi was worth it...and it was. Probably the best hamachi I've ever tasted here in the states. We ordered the omakase and finally decided to quit after the 7th item. The service wasn't that bad either and is similar to the service you would get in Japan. So come on people - give credit where credit is due - this place does it right when it comes to their fish and its quality.
Pros: great sushi
Cons: crowded

The baby tuna sashimi is incredible, one of a kind. The albacore melts in your mouth. the salmon, suprisingly tasty best Ive had- they put some kind of transparent seaweed on top that is a bit sweet but not overwhelming. the scallop was awesome. Stay away from the yellowtail which I thought was below average. the sweet shrimp was cooked/not right with no shrimp heads which we thought is the best part. My girlfriend had the oysters which were mmm mmm mmm. tuna roll not good.
Pros: good fish, fresh, good sashimi
Cons: bad service, pricey, no parking

Diners have two options: 1. Sitting at a table and ordering from the menu or 2. Sitting at the sushi bar and having the Trust Me menu. Trust Me means you sit down, shut up, and eat what the sushi chef puts in front of you. It's delicious and it's the real deal but you must follow the rules. There's nothing funnier than seeing someone who's sitting at the bar dare to make a small request, only to have the Sushi Nazi stare them down. The problem with the menu is that they won't take your order until you select a certain quota of food, so I always end up ordering more than I can physically eat and spending more than I would at other sushi restaurants. Why do people put up with this? The sushi is extraordinarily fresh and delicious.

Awesome sushi. Chef Nozawa serves up basic no frill sushi: albacore, tuna, yellowtail - the baby tuna sashimi is oustanding. Note however, there is absolutely no ambiance at this little sushi joint set in a small strip mall. My husband doesn't eat seafood of any kind, cooked or raw, except Sushi Nozawa - it's that good.

Without mentioning Urasawa, Nozawa is the Best in LA for Omakase and if your in Little Tokyo then Sushi Gen is a good selection. He is very selective about his fish and it shows. How anyone can complain about the price is beyond me but then a lot of people think Imitation Crab is ok too at other Places!

If you found this review by searching for Sushi Nozawa on Google or elsewhere chances are you have either already been there or you are thinking about going because you have heard about it or read somewhere that it is the mecca of sushi restaurants in Southern Califonrina. For the initiated Sushi Nozawa needs no explaining. For the beginner, don't believe the hype. Nowzawa is not the second coming of the raw fish rapture. What it is is a great place to have some delicious, not to mention pricey, sushi. I think you can't get out of there for under $50 per person for lunch. I have only had the Trust Me menu there so I can't speak to anything else. The chef makes for you whatever he thinks is good that day. Now I have been there many times and I can't say I have ever seen any variation in the pieces served. That said they were always very fresh and very tasty. The warm tuna hand roll is perhaps my favorite sushi dish ever. If you are into sushi you should check out this place at least once. One more thing -- the decor is nothing to talk about. This is a no-frills little strip mall store front. But then again, the food provides all of the ambience you need.
PROS: Freshest, Tastiest Sushi in LA
CONS: Expensive

Out of the dozens of sushi dens on Ventura blvd. Nozawa is one of the worst. From the stale fishy smell of the joint to the average quality of the over priced sushi, Nozawa just does not compare to the competition. Don't even get me started on the rude service and cold atmosphere... If you want great quality sushi at a more resonable price (and much better service) I recommend Taka house of sushi on Van Nuys in Sherman Oaks. It's a little hidden, but if you know where Solley's and cafe 50's are you'll find it
PROS: Leaving as soon as you can!
CONS: Nazi like service...
