With the lack of options for good chinese in Cambridge, Zoe's really stands out because they offer a a few authentic dishes as opposed to none at all. Be sure to order the spicy boiled beef or any of the traditional sichuanese dishes. Unfortunately, many of the dishes served here are toned (less spice, less msg) down to accommodate the bland New England palate. Prices are in line with what you would expect from most take out style chinese restaurants and luncheon special from around five dollars are available.

The restaurant is probably one of the crappiest looking restaurants I've ever seen. It sits at the edge of a commuter rail line, near the parking lot of a dilapidated Star Market. Hours are till 10pm nightly, I think.
That being said, the food is quite amazing, with some caveats. I tried eating lunch here a few times, but most of the lunch dishes are kind of simplistic and reminiscent of cheap chinese food trucks that sit outside MIT. The real dishes are listed further into the menu, under the North/South style cooking and also in the Sichuan style cooking. Food is liberally spicy. I recommend the Sichuan whole fish, pork shoulder, lamb with cumin (delightful), and the Ma Po tofu (wow.) Everything is usually delicious. This is the kind of stuff I can't imagine myself making.
Restaurant is a bit small. Probably around six tables total.
Pros: Inexpensive, Parking easy, Delivery
Cons: Crappy location, zodiac paper food mat

My book group chose to gather at Zoe's for our monthly meeting. I hadn't had GOOD chinese food in years, so I wasn't actually expecting much. I was truly pleasantly surprised! Zoe's is GREAT chinese food, and is by far the best in the greater Boston area. I highly recommend the scallion pancakes for an appetizer and the Spicy Chicken with Hot Pepper, as well as the General Gau's chicken. Our table also ordered a whole fried fish which everyone loved, along with the eggplant with garlic sauce. The service was excellent, and one good tid-bit to know - it's a B.Y.O.B restaurant, with a handy liquor store directly across the street. We brought our own bottles of wine and had a great time!

Yoshi's is across the street from my old house, so of course this was the primary place that I would get Japanese food. It's an affordable, convenient and pleasant enough little place, and their non-sushi food is fine. Especially some of the noodle soups are pretty good.
However, the primary fare of a sushi place is sushi, and they're somewhat lacking in freshness there and serve sushi at the wrong temperature. We completely stopped ordering their sushi after we were served a spider roll that tasted plain spoiled.
Go there for dumplings, soup or a bento box, but I wouldn't do a la carte.

Yoshi's is a sweet little place in Powderhouse Square, Somerville (a short walk from Davis). They have an excellent lunch box which I think is the best value for lunch in the area. For $7.00 or so you get: an entree (tofu, tempura, salmon, beef, etc.), dumplings, salad, maki, seaweed salad, lettuce salad, miso soup, etc. Can be done all veg as well! Always fresh and tasty, clean decor, very pleasant service. Great neighborhood place.

Yoshi's continues to be the hidden gem of Boston/Great Boston. With it's small yet defined menu and BYOB policy, Yoshi's delivers the greatest sushi in town.
The atmosphere appears quiet and empty, but it's to your advantage where you can dine in a nice quaint spot. Their sushi chefs are 2nd to none and will whip you up a custom roll or order if you can describe it. Bring your own bottle of wine or beer, and sit back and relax in this 5 star venue.
Pros: Entire Menu
Cons: Zero

Highly recommended for a good meal in Union Sq.

This place has a great selection of wings. I like the Rochester sauce the best. A bit of a warning if you want to get Buffalo style: the hot is extremely spicy and the suicide is extreme. The prices for wings are about average. The soy wings are pretty tasty, but overpriced as are the salads.
