I was a bit worried the first time I went into this store, since I am not an Adventist. However, I found the store to be welcoming to everyone and not at all intimidating. The food section is rather small, but they carry a lot of vegan items that are hard to find even in some of the area health food stores. Some of what I found included quarts of Tofutti ice cream and shredded Tofutti cheese; two things I have never seen anywhere else. The store also has a ton of books and gifts that are religious in nature.

Amazon does offer the same books at a lower price, but you don't get to look through the book before you buy it. If you are trying to choose between a couple of books, Border's is the place to go. It is almost certain they will have it and you can evaluate the different books to make your selection.

While better lit and more modern in appearance than its local competition, Lisbon's is smaller and appears to have a more limited selection. Lisbon's also seems to have more of an emphasis on the gifts than the books, so I primarily shop where when I need to pick up a present or look through the music collection. While the staff is pleasant, I don't find Lisbon's to offer the same warmth that I find down the street.

This comic shop, nestled right in the outskirts of all the renovations happening in DTSS, is a little slice of what Fenton Street used to be. It doesn't draw the gentrified crowds that are migrating to Silver Spring these days, but a more devout group of comic-lovers. Any time of day that you come you will find avid comic book junkies in the aisles checking out the wares. The store is somewhat small, but they have a good selection of classics and the serials in the basement. (Just be careful about bringing kids down here; you might have to shield their eyes from graphic drawings every other comic.) Upstairs there are more kid-friendly comics, including Calvin and Hobbs books and various comic-related toys. Also, check local listings because this comic store participates in Free Comic Day every year!
