Our oldest son's birthday is in the middle of May and we've found this to be the perfect time for an outdoor get together on the lake at Shawnee Mission Park with our friends and family. Several times, we've rented a shelter here (specifically Shelter #7 as it's one of the bigger 'Small' shelters with a capacity of 56 and sits right on the lake) and everyone always has a terrific time! The rental fee for a Johnson County resident for 1/2 day is only $35 - quite a bargain in my opinion - as this includes 6-7 hours reserved time, 7 tables, 2 grills, and the electricity and lights. You can bring your own food, decorations, etc... and really customize the party too!

Shawnee Mission Theater in the Park is a great place for family entertainment. There are usually about 5 live productions a summer. There is a hill on which to sit and everyone brings blankets and chairs. Coolers and frisbees are also welcome. The productions begin when it is dark but you must arrive early to get a good seat.

What a wonderful, georgeous park! This park is huge and has tons of things to do for the whole family, including your dogs. There are literally dozens of shelters throughout the park (that can all be rented for private use) with grills and tables and benches for great family picnics or bbq's. There are also several bigger and smaller playgrounds throughout the park. The greatest thing however is the huge lake for boating and fishing and even a beach for swimmers. The park has horseback riding trails and nature trails for hiking. And for the doglovers there is a designated area for the dogs to run and play off the leash and go for a swim in the lake. Great family outing!
