My husband's family lives in Portland, and when they come to visit they want two things: Dick's hamburgers and Pike Place Brewery Beer.
Dick's is the best. Greasy fries (REAL potatoes!), hot hamburgers and cold soda. If you ask for a substitution (hold the mayo, extra onion, etc.) you'll get laughed at. You get what you get, and if you want something extra, you pay for it and add it yourself.
Ketchup and onion are extra, 5 cents a piece.
The prices are low, the service is so-so, but the food is where it's at. I'd say the worst part about Dick's is waiting in line in the rain, as at every Dick's but the Queen Ann location you order from outdoor windows.

OK, so it isn't like a $300 detail nor is it the quickie $7 with your gas and who cares if it scratches wash. It is instead as many folks have noted a Seattle institution. For $20, you get 20 minutes of joy as your kids watch it and you get to remember all those movies feature car washes when you were a kid.
They use soft brushes so they hopefully won't destroy your finish and for $20, it is a decent job. So, not the very best, but a good value for the money. BTW, the downtown location is the oldest and funnest just because the elephant is so big.

We met some work friends here recently. It is a definite 5 star restaurant in terms of quality and service. The food is delicious and the wines really compliment the meal. However, this is a downtown restaurant and very expensive. It is kind of a one-time thing if it is for Prom, Engagement, Anniversary. Even then, it is more than we will spend again.

This is the original, Capitol Hill Top Pot - hidden in a residential neighborhood - difficult parking and all. The place has a wonderful ambiance with stacks of books and wood panels and all. Plus the old-fashioned donut is worth the fat and carbs! Coffee is good too.
Only thing: service is a wee bit chilly unless you are a very handsome construction worker, in which case the pierced gal behind the counter will be very nice!

Lots of pretty things to look at in the Italian genre: everything from bowls and napkins to kitchen tools. They also sell some wonderful, gourmet things: cheeses, wines, Marie Belle Aztec chocolate.
For lunch: panini sandwiches made to order. Expressos, lattes, etc.
This is in the middle of the block and a little hard to see from the car, but worth the search for parking!

More
This is an excellent health food store, and even though the prices are higher than a chain like Safeway, for healthy food, I think this is comparable in price to Madison Market, and way less than Whole Foods. And more importantly, this is a small, Mom and Pop-like neighborhood store. I love the friendly and charming feel of 15th Avenue area in Capitol Hill, and this place definately adds to that sense. Also, the veggies and fruits are always fresh, they have a good selection of vegeterian and gourmet tems, and the staff is always friendly, always. I give it a big thumbs up!
PROS: Fair prices, great fresh healthy food, charming area, friendly staff.
CONS: Prices higer than a chain store, but better food- worth it!
