I loved the City People's on Capitol Hill. Since they closed it, I have gone to the madison valley location and have since stopped shopping there. The staff is very rude and not particularly helpful. I used to go to get plants and cute things for my garden but have found that I do not want to deal with the snotty employees. Home Depot may not be whimsical, but the staff is nice and they answer your questions.

You will be able to find the landscaping standards anywhere you go, but sometimes you want something more. The best combo of plant variety and really personalized, knowledgeable service can be had in this neighborhood nursery. If you want to talk plants (and who wouldn't?), Minter's is the place to shop.
The people here are always helpful, never seem to want to rush you through a purchase, and genuinely interested in your landscaping and gardening dilemmas. They have a variety of references behind the counter, so if they don't know an answer, they will look it up for you.
Minter's particularly excels at roses, and their selection is fantastic. Rose gardening in the PNW can be tricky, but they have chosen varieties that are resistant to black spot and I have done very well with roses under their instruction.
They offer free classes in spring and early summer. I found the pruning class very helpful, but there are also container classes which should be fantastic, judging by the display containers featured in the nursery and greenhouse.

This eatery is located in the Seattle International District. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a catching site. A tankful of beautiful koi fish, nice colorful koi. :) The atmosphere is appealing with its pink tablecloths and wicker furniture. It is well lit, too.
There's both an ice cream case and beverage case by the front entrance. This is convenient for the walkers needing a quick beverage.
The menu here is varied and reasonably priced. Portion sizes are ample and taste is delicious. I had their noodle soup with chicken, to go. Service was great.

if customer service is what you are looking for, like a polite acknowledgment or pleasant demeanor, you will simply not find it here. If you are looking to get a fair (very comparable to other places in Seattle that do the same thing for the same price) mani/pedi for $30, in a fairly clean nail salon, then this place suffices. My last experience there was having a 20 year boy tell me that although the sign on the door says that they close at 6pm on a Sunday, they are deciding to close early and would therefore not give my mother a manicure. I think he was especially rude when I politely asked for the service to be performed by one of the ladies working there. the fact that him and his homey swirling around in their chairs and were abrasive and nonchalant simply did not entice me to have him give my mother a half decent manicure. I am not sure if I would patron again, let alone recommend it wholeheartly...then again, you get what you pay for?

Despite the name, "#1 Thai" seems to me to be more of a Vietnamese restaurant than a Thai one, but they do have some Thai food, and at any rate the food is pretty good. They always have some featured lunch specials that are cheap, too - usually some kind of curry, and a Vietnamese sandwich.

I was very happy when I found that Seattle Appliance Repair serves old Wedgewood ranges.
I highly recommend Seattle Appliance Repair to anybody who has old appliances, particularly ovens and stoves. I had Seattle Appliance Repair repair my old gas range Wedgewood. I decided to have Seattle Appliance Repair do it for a number of reasons:
1. they work on all appliance brands, regardless of the brand and age. It was less costly than having to buy a new range.
2. I liked the fact that when they replaced my oven’s thermostat, they also provided complete maintenance on the range, including the oven and stove. They also cleaned all the gas lines and adjusted all pilot’s lights.
3. I haven’t seen any other company to provide 24/7 same day service, and I am very pleased to see that Seattle Appliance Repair stays behind their policy.

We had done a kitchen remodel and had so much "junque" to be removed from our raised deck...the contractor actually told us that these folks would be less expensive than he could offer his services...so we called them up, scheduled the time and everything went as planned. I believe they had given us a ballpark estimate...and sadly enough I can't remember what the total was....but we had stove, refrigerator and massive heavy things to be moved off our deck...down some pretty steep stairs... they were very innovative and lowered the stove into the truck...we felt so relieved when it was all gone...and they were extremely reasonable as I recall.... they even called ahead to make sure we were ready for them to come and do the pick-up...I do remember having to call them back to get the ballpark figure...but would recommend them from our experience....I got the impression that the crew you get has somewhat to do with the price...ours took some extra stuff for themselves and didn't charge us for those items...

Stylish Capitol Hill Bar + Bistro

More
With a 10-month-old at home and full-time+ jobs, my wife and I don't get out as much as we used to. We'd almost forgotten we had a babysitter for Saturday night when a friend emailed about his birthday celebration at Barca, also planned for Saturday.
Sensing an opportunity for a proper night on the town, we headed off in search of a good restaurant within easy walking distance of Barca -- meaning somewhere in the Pike/Pine corridor of south Capitol Hill. Our pick -- based on a brief visit for drinks late last year -- was 1200, located on the corner of 12th and Pike.
1200 is really two establishments in one: a small but stylish cafe/bar located directly on the corner, with a quieter and more private bistro-style dining room in "back" (actually in the the next-door storefront, but without a separate entrance). We walked in around 8:30 without a reservation and, after scanning the menus in both rooms, opted for a table in the bar (in part for the livelier setting, but also because I'd heard the bar-only steak frites was excellent).
The night we visited, the bar crowd offered a fascinating cross-section of Capitol Hill scenes: stylish, middle-aged gay men and women; a smattering of legit urban hipsters; and a handful of square couples (like us) rounding things out. No group seemed to dominate, and the overall vibe was comfortable and relaxed, with very little see-and-be-seen posturing going on.
In addition to a closely-spaced row of barstools, the bar offers seating at six or eight small dinner tables, plus a few high stools and cocktail tables tucked against the windows. The entire area is served by one waiter, covering both drinks and dinner orders with remarkable efficiency and poise. We selected an open table against the far wall (perfectly positioned for people-watching), ordered our first round of drinks and took a closer look at the menu.
The bar menu offers a subset of the main dining room options, plus a few bar-only items. Pricing seemed fair in both rooms, but the bar menu offers some notable bargains. My wife and I split a house salad ($6), a half-dozen Hamma Hamma oysters (a $10 special that night, not on the regular menu), my anticipated steak frites (just $13) and the burger with goat cheese ($9?, and another bar-only offering).
Everything arrived quickly, in the correct sequence, and with little delay from plating to serving (the fries accompanying both the burger and steak were piping hot - a winning sign). The salad was very good, the oysters excellent, the steak and burger both solidly respectable, and the fries very good (if a little thickly cut for my tastes). Our total bill for dinner, several drinks, and a tip reflecting the excellent service came to well under $100 - a welcome surprise when compared to similar places elsewhere in town.
Based on our experience, I highly recommend 1200 for its winning combination of well-executed food and drink, inviting atmosphere, enjoyable people-watching, and proximity to other notable Pike/Pine watering holes. Next time you head out for a night on the town, give them a try and let me know if you agree.
