for kids' shoes, i have been to nordstrom and payless shoes both at northgate mall, sole food, and to the shoe zoo, but none of these stores seems to emphasize (let alone offer) easy velcro shoes. i always go for kids shoes that have 2 things: (1) one (not two) wide velcro strap, and (2) wide-tongue so that you can splay the shoe wide open... that is what i want as a busy mom who is juggling a baby and a 2 year old. shoe zoo only had one model for boys and a couple umi brand pink boots for girls. the store does have free easy parking and helpful knowledgable staff -- just no shoes i want to buy. so, i won't go back
on the other hand, zappos on-line has tons of shoes with just one velcro strap that open up wide to make putting the shoe on a little foot super easy (you can even search for such shoes on their website as they have a whole search category for 'hook-and loop' aka velcro). so, i bought on ebay a childrens brannock device which is the foot measuring device and now i just measure my kid's foot at home and then order on line. easier than visiting the shoe zoo, prices are better on line, and you don't have to bundle the baby or look for parking. sorry, shoe zoe. zappos is not only easier, it is superior.

This little neighborhood children's shop recently expanded to offer consignment. Used selection seems organized and well-screened. New items are pricey but they are a small independent store I want to stay around. Their inventory is unique and of high quality. Toys are interesting and promote creativity. It's not your standard stuff. Give them a look!

Limited Too is full of trendy clothes and accessories for girls with style. This teen and tween minded shop is just the place for the young lady sized 6 to 18+. Even moms might like some of the styles for herself. My tween really likes the idea that the Build-a-Bear Workshop has clothes that match some of the Limited Too line. Great marketing idea. However, just like most Mall shops, things could be a bit overpriced, but the sales are awesome.

I stumbled across Kim's via craigslist, where they often post some of their better acquisitons. Kim's is a very crowded consignment store that seems to sell just about everything a child could possible need. Some, if not much of the stuff, has definitely seen better days but occassionally there is a good find. I got a great exersaucer that retails for twice the price.
I called ahead of time to buy the exersaucer and paid over the phone to hold the product.

More
This is a really good store to find well-made, beautiful clothing for children. They hold up really well after washing and are sized so that they last much longer than most other children's clothing. (For example, I bought a sweater for my daughter there that she should have outgrown by 6 months, but she can still wear it at 13 months). They have socks that fit newborns, when most newborn socks can be kicked off and are lost quickly. The staff is really helpful and nice and they help to direct me to items I hadn't thought of, even when they were lower priced than the original items I was viewing. The major negative is that they are very expensive for children's clothing (i.e. about $6.00 for a pair of infant socks and $36 for a baby sweater). It is a great place for a baby shower gift, because of how beautiful the clothing is.

This store seems smaller than the other ones, and it's a little harder to get to. Pacific Place in and of itself does not lend to easy shopping with a baby in tow. It's more for adults. Gymboree is way too expensive anyway, and they turn their styles so much to create the illusion of HTF clothing. Well, it's just kids clothes, and Old Navy makes the same quality for MUCH less, and their sizes are easier to find in stock. Gymboree tends to cater too much to the girls too, so boys have a *really* hard time of finding in stock wearable clothes that are reasonsably priced.

Miniature versions of preppy adult clothing might make your heart stop when you walk by. Perhaps better suited to window shopping if you are childless, this is the place to find the perfect red pea coat; a seersucker jacket, or the button-down shirt that is just right. Well made and priced accordingly, Flora & Henri is a local gem.

I really think that the Children's Place has come a long way lately. They used to have sort of garish styles and loud, neon colors. Recently they must have acquired a new designer because they now have very cute, stylish clothing for kids that is VERY affordable. Just because my child is a child doesn't mean she must dress like a neon sign or a cartoon character. I like all their matching accessories too - from shoes to headscarves.

Bootyland really went downhill for us after they moved to the new location. The consignment selection went downhill fast and the staffing went from friendly to blah. I guess it's an OK shop if you're interested in new stuff at boutique prices, but parents looking for decent used clothes might as well just keep on going.
