Yes it has a great selection. That however will never get me in their again. I returned some movies before I left on a three week vacation with my family. The store said that they only got one of the two movies and then the second one was returned a week later ( when I and all my family was out of the country). I nicely explained to them that the movies were returned at the same time (it was impossible for the movies to have been returned at any other time.) and that they made the mistake at check in. I asked for my money to be returned. The manager said they "don't make mistakes" and could not credit my bank card for the 13 extra days that were charged. When I made a big deal out of it. He offered to give me store credit.... of $25.00! I would have excepted but the total that was over charged to me was $48.75. At this point, nice little me that can never raise my voice in public, total them that if they did not give me my money back I was going to be pressing fraud charges. I got my money refunded to my card. I find their polices criminal and urge no one to do business with them until they change them.

When I was a student at the UW, I would routinely go here to rent the movies I needed to watch for my film classes and history classes (even my English Lit - don't tell!). This is a really helpful store, with TONS of movies that you can't find elsewhere. I used to live next to the original Scarecrow over on 65th and Latona, and I'm so glad that they moved to this new, larger location (long ago, but since I still remember the early 90s with their little store, this is new to me!). Great place, best selection anywhere.

I knew that Scarecrow had a nationwide following - apparently folks from L.A.'s movie scene frequent Scarecrow Video. I didn't feel like driving, so I tried the website. It was great.

my family's home movies. I was really disappointed. I mean, the one where I have a mullet or the one where I am cross-dressing as a five year old are amazing movies but no, Scarecrow said that they haven't found out how to get them yet. But they will. I'm sure of it.
Until then I go there to get the 'easier to find' movies about cats who like to protest big business on Tuesdays and the documentaries about mothers against drunk boating. I still ask about the home movies though. The mullet one is to die for!

Scarecrow Video in the U-District is to movies what Powell's in Portland is to books. Geared more to the serious film fanatic than the casual video viewer, the main floor is organized by director rather than genre. However, entire upstairs rooms are dedicated to specific genres such as Film Noir and Anime. There is a huge selection of foreign films. Countries with 'serious' film industries are better represented; you will find more rare French dramas than Bollywood hits. But the odds are that no matter how obscure a movie you are looking for, Scarecrow has it.

The selection at this video store is mind-blowing. You'll probably end up coming in for a certain movie and walk out of the store with three Indonesian films you never even heard of. The selection is massive and the organization of the store is intriguing. Love a certain director? They have their own section allowing some lesser-known films that wouldn't make it into Blockbuster to get some recognition. The staff are all quintessential film buffs and are great for suggestions-- just ask!
The store makes most of their income on late fees that can sting you (especially in this new no-late-fee era), so watch your small rental-time-window carefully.
Check out some Fellini while you're there! 8 1/2, La Dolce Vita, and Roma are my favorites. :-)

I seriously felt like I had walked into the Soup...I mean Video Nazi's place when i first visited Scarecrow in the U-district.
The selection is amazing though...I could get lost here looking for great indie/under-appreciated films.
Standing in line to ask a question is a bit tiresome since you have to wait for people who are checking out as well... they do have a couple computers that aren't too easily seen at first but are in the main area and you can use them yourself.
Again... this is the place you go if you want to find something interesting by that director you really like who made that one film you really liked... they'll know what you are talking about.
Prices are about 3.75 for normal rentals and they have 4 day, 2 day and other rental lengths depending on how old the dvd is or whether it's a show or movie. Easy parking... on street or in their free lot.
Nice staff, just start out your relationship right and ask them about some cool indie film before you go ahead and rent a cheesy comedy from the new release section.

They have everything. EVERYTHING. Except a longer rental period. Seriously, if they started a netflix type service they'd make bank.

Scarecrow video is amazing. They have all the movies you wished the big chains carried. Then ones that are out of print, obscure, indie, or otherwise.
While we live quite a ways from Scarecrow I will occasionally venture across town to rent here as I know they will have what I need.
I highly recommend going to check it out if you haven't already.
