When they started building this place, I thought to myself "no way. I give it a day, tops." But this was before those advertisements, like the one that implies that Seattle has only one season or whatever. The acoustics in this theater is amazing. Treat yourself to a fun night of the classics, music style.

Make sure you take in this year's production of 'Black Nativity' at Intiman Theatre. The yearly production of Langston Hughes' gospel musical play is always a blast. You'll be treated to a gospel choir directed by Seattle's famous Rev. Pat Wright, as well as a rousing and creative telling of the nativity story from local actors usually ranging from ages 7-75. It's a great show, and only happens once a year. Make it a tradition.

More
Shakespeare, the dramatic staple throughout history, is constantly being reinvented with this great Seattle Center troupe. The plays range from the well-known Romeo and Juliet to lesser-known Shakespeare such as Love's Labours Lost. The directors are artists in that they can take dated texts and apply them to modern settings, atmospheres, and contexts. For example, last season's "The Taming of the Shrew" was an all-male cast! The gender implications of this play were vivified and magnified with this great directing risk. As always, the actors are top-notch dramatists well-known throughout the Seattle theater-world.
If you're looking to save a buck, special pre-premier shows give great rates and excellent, near-perfect productions. Check listings before the shows are reviewed in the papers to get on the special post-production, pre-premier nights.

We saw two shows there last year: the Santaland Diaries and Three Tall Women. Both shows were somewhat flawed but pretty entertaining, and at the $20 ticket price and with intimate seating, it's a nice little place to see a play. It's right by Green Lake so it's possible to take a little walk during the intermission or before the play.

I have been seeing shows at OTB for a number of years and I have mostly been pleased. Thier dance and theater selections are generally the only game in town if you want to see out-of-town cutting edge dance and theater. I am a big fan of thier regular season. Thier NWNW series is a bit hit or miss in my opinion. I am sometimes confounded as to thier selection criteria (disclaimer in the interest of disclosure, I have applied for this series a number of times) but have found some real gems in each year that I have gone to the festival.
I am also discouraged recently at their inclusion of greater amounts of music in their season, I mean do we REALLY need more music venue's in seattle? There are few venues that produce cutting edge dance and theater in Seattle, I just don't see the need to give up this real estate for another 'ubiquitously Seattle' music venue.
