Thrift Store Chain--Lake City Way Branch 4/30/2006

Though I prefer to shop at independent stores rather than chains, in a pinch I would much sooner go to Value Village than Nordstrom or J.C. Penney. I can’t imagine I’ll ever spend money on brand-new clothes again when thrift stores like Value Village carry, along with some garbage, many items of clothing that have never been worn, or show no wear. Sure, Value Village is known to carry a few things so odd they seem like jokes, such as record sleeves containing only fractions of records, but most of their merchandise is usable. The tape deck on the $10 portable CD player may be broken, but if the CD player works, I’d rather spend that $10 than the $200 it originally cost. more

My favorite place to shop for books (no, that's not a typo) 3/29/2006

I've given up on finding clothes I like at Value Village (I'm an odd size to fit), but I go there all the time to buy books. It's perfect -- the books are affordable (I think the prices range from 0.99 to 2.99), and unlike the overwhelming variety at an actual bookstore, I can usually browse the entire selection in less than an hour. It's totally random, of course, but I always manage to end up with five or six books that I've been wanting to read or (even better) have never heard of. Yeah, I know, if I'm gonna be such a cheapskate I should go to the library already. Somehow that never occurs to me, despite my degree in Librarianship. Go figure. more

Take About $10.00 and Your Imagination 9/16/2005

I am not a big costume person, but I am a fan of Value Village (there are several locations around town including Crown Hill and Capitol Hill). This thrift shopping emporium really takes Halloween seriously. They sell new costumes to be sure. But their staff also picks through the mountains of donated clothing and accessories and features them on "costume" racks. It has to be seen to be believed. Think "Saturday Night Live" costume department--Mrs. Lupner's housecoat, Mr. Robinson's cardigan, Samurai Drycleaner's jacket, Velvet Jones' pimp threads. Other options include: Champion Party Supply (on lower Queen Anne) and Vintage Costumers (on Roosevelt at 70th). more

Northend Value Village 8/20/2005

One of a chain of charitable thrift stores known for color-coded sale items. An employee explained that each color corresponds to the week the item entered the store, and after it's been there a few weeks it goes on sale. Everything rotates through in 4-5 weeks or so. Good selection of women's clothing with some real steals on shoes occasionally. A fair bit of books, kitchen ware and some furniture and CDs round things out here. more
