I was thrilled to see Salumi on the front page (online) of the New York Times today. Congrats, Batali. You deserve it! I'm a pretty big eater and I like to try out new places. After hearing a friend's of mine praised about Salumi (located on 3rd ave in Pioneer Square) the sandwhiches at this place and how they make their own cured meat, I was curious. I tried to go there for the past few times but every time I've failed. Finally, today, I made it. We go there to avoid the line by 11:40, apparently we should be there by 11am! The line was inside out! We waited for half an hour and finally got to order. The original plan was to eat there, but they only had 4 tables and can only seat 10-15 people. Anyhow, I ordered the Grilled Lamb sandwhich. The place is cute and feels very New York Delish. But the half an hour wait and was not worth the grilled lamb sandwhich. It was good, but not great! I was expecting greatness! I guess that's what happens when someone hypes up something. The next time I go I will definitely call ahead and preorder (you don't have to wait in line if you phoned in earlier!). If you really want to try the place, I suggest you get there by 11am, call in before or go after the lunch rush. Oh yeah, they're closed on Mondays.

I've lived in Boston and San Francisco, both known for their Italian neighborhoods plentiful with markets and authentic food. However, salumi is nothing like anything I've ever tasted. The freshness and complexity of the meats is incredible. The homemade fresh mozarella is out of this world- you'll never want to go back to the supermarket stuff. I haven't tried all of the meats, but most of them have been delicious. Go early to beat the lunch crowd, you will wait in a line out the door for a sandwich. If you have time, try the family style dining with a glass of the communal wine. Oh and try to go on Tuesday for the best gnocci in Seattle, handmade by Mario's mother on Tuesdays.

Salumi specializes in cured meats, Italian style. The sandwiches are an almost perfect combination of meat and cheese on specialty bread. Cold meat and cheese platters are also available as well as meats to go. The seating area at this establishment is European style (you share one table with strangers) and very small. The atmosphere is congenial and the staff knows how to wield a knife. Service overall is great and prices are reasonable (around 6 for a sandwich).

I has heard good things about this place. The place to get an Italian Sammy. But, well I think this one was overshot. Got the prosciutto with fig and goat cheese. I liked the spreads enough. I guess I'm just a cured, dried meat kinda person. Should've gotten the salami cause it looked delish. I really was looking forward to getting a bite here. Maybe next time.

A store and restaurant devoted to the art and science of charcuterie, or preserved meat, Salumi takes pork (and beef and lamb) and transubstantiates it, creating something transcendent, something the humbe pig could never dream of becoming: delicious, intensely flavored sausages, salamis and prosciuttos. Open only on weekdays from 11 to 4 pm (or thereabouts; check the hours) and located in an inconspicuous storefront in Pioneer Square, it's not the easiest place to get to. But it's worth the trip. Join the line that often stretches out the door and make your way into the comically narrow store, past the cooler which more often than not contains a curing pig or lamb. Some days, you'll also pass a woman rolling homemade gnocci in the window. Order a sandwich or platter at the counter, and either take it out or eat at the two crowded, family-style tables in back, with honor-system jugs of wine. Everything's good, either eaten in or taken out. Try the Muffo sandwich, with a mix of salamis, cheese and olive spread, or the meatball sandwich, with big, porky, homemade meatballs. The homemade lamb sausage is fantastic and even the mozzarella-tomato-pesto sandwich is great. Just plan a long stroll after lunch, to walk it off.

This is one of my favourite places to go for lunch. Note: Check hours of operation and days open before going as they tend to keep limited shop hours. What can I say? I haven't had a bad thing here yet. If you are vegetarian, you may want to go somewhere else. House-cured meats are the name of the game here. The sandwiches are to die for, especially the meatball and the pork sandwiches. It may seem a bit on the pricey side for sandwiches but the quality of the ingredients are top-notch. Molto Mario's father is often here attending to the restaurant. Wine by the glass is on an honour system. Be prepared to share one of the three tables (if you are lucky enough to get a seat). If you love house cured meats, GO NOW!

small hole in the wall with great following. It is a must for anyone that likes cured meats. This is the famous and iron chef Mario Batalli's dad's place. It is said that ichiro likes to eat here as well. they have handmade cured meat. They have weird hours, and are always busy and have a line during lunch. Only one big table to sit at if you want to eat there, so be social if you are going to eat at the restaurant. On Friday's momma batalli makes hand made gnochi which are very excellent. I think this place is a must.
