If you love Chinese food with a mix of trendy flavor and a yuppier crowd, you must stop by Shanghai 1930 near the pier in SF. The decor is definitely much nicer then your normal Chinese restaurant. It's definitely not a whole in a wall. The place is dimly lit with and a big open space.
We were greeted with enthusiasm when we arrived. We reserved a table for 12 people. We decided to break the into groups of 4 and order separately. For our table, we got the egg plant (which was a bit salty), the fish on the vine(fried and served with a tamarind sauce on top, this was my favorite), the lion king meatballs (this was decent, but not great), crispy chewy Sichuan beef (they weren't kidding when they said chewy). The entrée ranges from 14-25 per dish. The price we paid after our meals and gratuity was about $27/person. However, I must say the food here is much better then Empress China in SF Chinatown. After eating our meal, we asked for our check.
My least favorite part of the night was wen we asked our waitress to split the check according to the 4 groups and we also gave her credit cards to charge. She wasn't happy, as a matter of fact, she rolled her eyes! That was just rude. Another complaint I have about this place is that the restaurant is located at the basement of a building so it was a bit hot and humid underneath. I don't understand why they can't afford to put some AC on.
Over all the dining experience was just ok, the food wasn't bad, the place is nice, but the service was pretty bad. I doubt that I will ever return to this place again. If you want to find out more about this restaurant, visit http://www.shanghai1930.com.

I consider Shanghai 1930 to be a pretty reliable place to meet people after work (for social or work reasons). The jazz always adds to the evening and the food is wonderful. I've eaten in the restaurant more for luncheons, but stick to the bar area in the evenings. My only complaint is at times the service is a little slow, but then again, the place is pretty busy so it is understandable.
I even got some friends hooked on the place and they suggest to go there (and have no problem with repeat visits).

My friends and I went to Shanghai 1930 to celebrate a friend's birthday. The food was great but the portions were pretty small for the amount we paid...Keep in mind we're all college students on a college student budget. (We actually ended up going to In N' Out afterwards) But the ambiance is great and the food is tasty and pretty to look at. The jazz music gets a little annoying after a while...but other than that, its a fun place to go if you're in SF.

we took a girlfriend out for her birthday to shanghai 1930 based on a recommendation i got from my manager at work. she said she had lunch there and it was delicious...so i made reservations for dinner. i was somewhat disappointed with the menu and cost plus the food. the ambiance wasn't all that either. it felt like the restaurant was trying to hard with the decor and lighting. the food was okay but definitely not worth the price. i'm glad i went but wouldn't go again.

Great looking bar.
Very good food, with a wide variety of interesting dishes (duck in lettuce leaves is a great appetizer).

Very nice environment. decent food also.. their Jazz band is great!!! it's not like most of the chinese restaurant, this one is more like a restaurant & Bar with the Jazz band. But the music starts maybe after 8pm only? so it's not good to go early... it's better if you can make a reservation beforehand since they get full very fast.
