I am irritated by N T's comment of how Columbia City has low standard because La Medusa is located in it. Let's not generalize!!!
La Medusa is a popular spot and you will need a reservation. For us, the place is a bit crowded and small. The salad and appetizer we ordered were very tasty but the entrees were so-so. The bread was hard to chew. The service however was excellent. We agree with the rating of 3.7 for this restaurant but for this rating we consider the place too pricey!

My husband and I treat ourselves to La Medusa when we are feeling like having something special, and we are never disappointed. I worked in the restaurant business for years, so I am a tough customer, and I love this place. The food is delicious, its reasonably priced, and the staff are great people. I highly reccommend everyone in the city make their way down to La Medusa (and don't forget to try the cauliflower- really, its incredible!)

We've heard great things about La Medusa and every time my husband and I drove by we would be reminded that we should go. Just recently, we finally made our reservation. The space is charming and warm. I loved the fact that the kitchen was visible. The food and service were good. But what my husband and I truly expected was Sicilian food, not PNW meets someone who once went to Italy. Don't get me wrong, the Tuna Ragu was yummy and my husband's Pollo was wonderful but I'm not sure we'd make it a habit to dine here.

When this place first opened up around 7 years ago, one of the owner's grandmother was Sicilain and the food was great! It became very popular and very busy. I think the owner's lost sight of why it was so great. Fresh pasta, interesting combinations and well executed. As they got busier the menu items first started to change. No more fresh pasta, same tired menu items, the chef-owner was clearly not in the kitchen anymore.
At that point and since it is an over priced place to get poorly prepared dry pasta that anyone could make at home for pennies. The spaghetti with sardines was lacking sauce, the meatballs were dry and the sauce devoid of flavor.
I can't believe that place is still in business! I guess the standards in Columbia city are pretty low and folks are just happy to have somewhere to go.

When I first discovered this place, my wife and I went twice a week for nearly a month. We coaxed our friends and family into going, we went by ourselves, and we took our 6 year old son. Every combination yielded a great time at La Medusa. We had nearly every dish on the menu last season (we have some catching up to do this season). I'd recommend just about anything they serve. They even brought out a lump of uncooked bread dough for my son to play with and shape into something clever before they baked it (to his delight of course). It is a friendly place with great food, great wine, great people.... just great all around.

La Medusa is a Columbia City favorite for good reason - the food is delicious and the service is usually top-notch. Grandma's greens with pine nuts, greens and anchovies are divine paired with the changing fish special. Dinner isn't cheap, but it is well worth it. Your servers will help you get to the Columbia Theater on time for a perfect date night.

La Medusa is a relatively new arrival in Columbia City (at least I can't remember it being there last year during Farmers Market time). [UPDATE: I was corrected by a fellow JB'er -- La Medusa has been here for 7 years - my bad - that's longer than I've been in Seattle, so shame on me for not finding this place sooner....]
The menu looks terrific, and it was packed last night. It's attractive, the prices seem fair, and although it's probably further hastening the upscale shift of this whole block of Rainier Ave S started by Tutta Bella and the Ale House a while ago, what's wrong with a tasty new restaurant?
The coolest thing happens on Wednesday nights in the summer, the same evening that the Farmers Market does its thing 1/2 block away: La Medusa chefs go over to the Market, pick out a bunch of tasty ingredients from that day's offerings from all the organic and local growers, and combines them to form a unique 3-course "Farmers Market Menu" only available that night.
So cool - what better way to spend a lovely summer Wednesday evening is there than that?
