Dining at 'The Met' in the last couple of years is like watching an old friend who has sunk into mediocrity after years of excellence. It hurts, but you have to speak the truth for their own good. It's time for an intervention.
To be clear I've been a long-time fan of 'The Met', making it my go-to restaurant for any occassion big or small. I've been lucky enough to enjoy some of the best steak houses in the world but The Met was always my personal favorite with truly superior food, staff and ambience. This makes it all the harder to admit that over the last couple of years The Met has lost its tradition of excellence.
Example, on a recent Sunday my wife and I were entertaining out of town guests. They'd heard me rave about The Met for years so fingers crossed, we made reservations. Sad to say the experience was a let down. The wait staff was robotic and showed no real interest or initiative in our dining experience. The ceaser salad drowned in dressing, the cheese sauce for the brocolli had a curdled film on top, the filet was poorly cut with a layer of fat on the edges, and there was so much grissle in our friend's Poterhouse that he had to leave a thrid on the plate. To be fair the desserts were all superior, with every choice better than the last.
The Maitre D' seemed to be occupied in some gossip with the waitstaff, stopping only for a plastic smile to customers on their way out. Someone needs to tell this guy to lead by example, and the service will improve.
Suffice to say our guests were disappointed. For about $90 a person, plus tip, we expected a lot more. I hope the Met has a shake-up soon because there was nothing like the old Met experience. Until then, save yourself the disappointment and dine at one of the other excellent steak houses in town.
Pros: Excellent ambiance, great bar, wonderful tradition over many years
Cons: Robotic wait-staff, good food but over-prepared, needs to get back to their tradition of excellence

I had a broken shoulder when my husband and I visited Seattle. He'd eaten here before and had raved about it when he returned to Atlanta. We made a reservation and were promptly seated. I had to have the steak, though, of course I couldn't cut it myself. They cut if for me in the kitchen, reassembled my filet into its general original shape, then garnished it as if it had never been cut. Our server was actually distressed that my husband beat her to cutting my asparagus. It was a beautiful experience and I can't wait to go back! (Atmosphere reminded me a little of the Oak Bar at The Plaza Hotel.)
Pros: over-the-top service, expertise, atmosphere, formal yet not pretentious, no kids

This restaurant has NEVER let me down! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone any time! It?s my favorite place for everything from happy hour, to a date, to a nice sit down dinner.
Nothing but wonderful atmosphere, service, food and prices!
The service is excellent! From the doormen to the bar tenders to the wait staff! They always know how to treat a lady!
I bring all my out of town guests that want to see the city. I?ll continue to go there as long as I live in the PNW!

I've lived in Seattle for 7 years and never dined at the Met before. My mother-in-law and her mother (Seattle natives) took me there Sunday evening. The service was atrocious (hello coffee refills?) and the food was ridiculously overpriced for what it was. I had a petit cut Filet ordered medium well (supposedly pink throughout) and it was tough and miniature. I've had less expensive and better cooked filets in midtown Manhattan. The creamed spinach was more like spinach drenched in cheese. Go to Jak's or El Gaucho for a much better atmosphere, service, and food.

Best steak in toon town is right....this place is a BIG FAT JOKE !!!!! Words cannot begin to describe the overrated aura of this establishment. Reservations at 8:15 on a Thursday, party of 7, we weren't even approached about being seated until 9:45. Finally got menus at 10:15. It was a business dinner, so we couldn't pull a fit and storm out, we had clients to impress. Ordered, the basics, steak/lamb/waitstaff told head of table to avoid seafood in the place as it was a steak house for a reason....thanks after we just took your recommend. on the Fruit de Mer platter. Anyway, wine steward arrived, we ordered a couple of very nice bottles, surprise only one bottle in house....there will be more tomorrow says the steward. He makes another recommendation for the second bottle. Places clean glasses down all around, then proceeds to mix the two wines in several guests' glasses. Again, trying to impress not throwing a fit,, I would have blown the roof off. Tables' entrees arrive, most of the steaks are overcooked (don't forget, their medium rare is everyone elses medium the waitstaff claims). Oh, and they ran out of baked potatoes, all that is left are the brickish "mashed" glop that they try and pass off as edible.
A couple of us sent the steaks back.....at 60 bucks a pop it should feel like a you know what in your mouth. 40 minutes later, the reorders were delivered, the time is now around 11:30. Guests' request for dessert were honored, soupy bananas foster and burnt caramel. Guess what, they are a steak house for a reason, they don't know a thing about desserts. Watier's parting words as he dropped the 1500 dollar check was.....we cut you some slack and comped the bananas. A parting trip to the bathrrom was breathtaking, I've seen cleaner johns on a New York contruction site after Buffalo wing night.
Do yourselves a favor.................STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE, ITS NAME IS FAR BETTER THAN THE ACTUAL EXPERIENCE. RIP Metropolitan Grille.
Pros: Nice Bar, harkens to Gotham-like era.
Cons: Everything the place claims to be "signature"...thus most of the menu.

i went to the Met on either a friday or saturday with my wife and 4 friends. other places that i have been in seattle with a similar quality of food to date were el gaucho's and morton's. we made reservations, which i would highly recommend, as we were early and still had to wait about 15 minutes after our reservation to be seated. it was a bit noisy, and crowded. the bartender was very knowledgeable about the more rare and uncommon liquors that they had. the captain was very informed about the wines that they had, also of ones they did not. he picked an excellent red ($90-sorry i don't know what it was other than good, red, and dry) that perfectly fit my friend's request. my wife and i got the chateau briand ($110-a sort of filet mignon for two, a first for both of us), it melts in your mouth! the service was excellent, as was the food. overall, i would say i was most impressed with the flavor of the chateau briand and the wine captain. the wait staff and service in general were as expected for this caliber of restaurant. it is close to the ferry as well.

Jury duty was 2 blocks up the hill and they said "wear your badge so that nobody will talk shop around you, and no alcohol". I'd read of the Metropolitan in my culinary magazines and peeked into the window.. Yup, that's going to be lunch. I sat at the bar area, a bright and cheerful place, full of eyecatching photos and saloon trivia. The bartender acted as my waiter and he was par excellance. Treated me like a little kid in the candy shop. We talked about the wine list and its wonders and I was surprised to learn the favorites of the house (most ordered). I'd said "IF I were allowed alcohol I would try Syrah, I've never tried that." Voila, he produced a little 4 ounce wine glass with just a taste of the magic wine that I'd only imagined, but only a sip. (It was major tasty.) From the lunch menu I went with fish and chips. Something about Japanese bread crumbs. They were the most savory tasting chips I ever nibbled, sea salt was the predominant flavoring and they burned my mouth! The fish was so crunchy and hot that you could see the heat vapors wafting up after you cracked them open, and truly they had a most wonderful taste. I ate so slowly. A small side of cole slaw was perfect, mysterious flavors that might be horseradish, but I don't know. It was truly a memorable meal. As I departed I told my bartender that I would return to eat their wonderful Kobe tenderloins, with lobster, and drink one of their 100's of wines. I can't wait to go back and have talked it up with coworkers and friends. Top Marks for the Metropolitan Grill's fish and chips. Can't wait to make this steak house an event and call it the best restaurant of my little world.
Pros: A dining experience
Cons: expense

It's unfortunate that this place continues to excel in editorial awards and the like. Must be political. The prices don't match the service (slow) or food (OK). I guess if you're not ordering several $100 bottles of wine, you are just a nobody. Save your money and go to any of the three Jak's in town, unless you feel the need to be noticed by those that think they are power players. I will give kudos to the bar staff for their excellent service and drinks in a very trying atmosphere. The same folks own and operate The Union Square Grill which is outstanding.
The Met gives me the impression that the customer should feel it is not only an honor to be let into the place but it is a privelidge to be served by them. I think it should be the other way around; treat the customer who is paying the bill whether it is large or small, that we are what is most important and it is a privelidge to be serving us. Afterall, what would happen if we all went away.
Pros: The bar and their service, Valet parking
Cons: You will lose your fortunes

5 Stars over and over. I'm not even a red meat eater, and I must always order the Steak Oscar. Best I've experienced on the West Coast!
