Hattie's Hat was a great experience. I never hang out in Ballard, but we were going to a show down at the Sunset and needed a place to crash beforehand. We met up with a couple friends and sat in one of the half circle booths, which was probably the best idea of night next to ordering a round of Pabst Tall Boys.
I really enjoyed Hattie's because of the ambiance. I didn't get the feeling that it was a trendy, scenester bar. It just sort of was and you either liked it or didn't. The interior at night is dark, very dark. There is random stuff all over the walls -- artifacts that look like they've been there since the beginning of the bar.
The waiter was really cool, but really slammed. The place was busy. I saw people in there from all walks of life, which I appreciated. It's definitely not a classy upscale wine bar so don't expect that. Expect a great place with a great vibe. My advice would be to go with some good friends and shoot the breeze all night.
One tip: Get the Pabst Tall Boys. Even if you aren't a cheap beer drink just do it for the experience.
Another tip: Hattie's is a great place to hang out before going to see a show at The Sunset or any other place on that strip. Spend about an hour there beforehand and loosen up with a drink or two.

Hattie's is really two places in one.
On weekends Hattie's serves an excellent breakfast. Perfect food after a late night of drinking. Plus, breakfast served until 5 for you late-risers. For those of you who like a cocktail during breakfast, Hattie’s serves excellent Bloody Mary's and Mimosa’s.
During the evenings Hattie’s is a great neighborhood bar. Stiff drinks, and amazing bar food such as burgers and grilled sandwiches. I have had the best grilled cheese sandwich EVER at Hattie's. It was a combination of chesses and grilled onions and tomatoes.
If I lived in Ballard, I would be a Hattie’s regular.

The front is a bar, and the back is a restaurant. They have a small menu, but everything we had was really good, including some really unique sweet potato fries with prosciutto, chilies, and cheese on them. The decor is a really charming mix that can only be described as French Country Diner.

This used to be a great Sunday morning breakfast spot. One of my closest friends absolutely loves this place, and often a group of us would get together for some end of the weekend breakfast and inappropriate chatter. I was horrified a few months ago when I last ate there to see the new breakfast menu. They completely changed it and eliminated omelets all together. I loved getting an omelet with hash browns there. I was so disappointed, I haven't been back since. I hope they change the menu soon because I have many fond memories of eating there.

Hattie's Hat is well known for offering a great night time atmosphere with a good bar and live music, but perhaps their best attribute is least known. Hattie's Hat offers brunch on the weekends. This brunch offers excellent traditional choices, such as bacon and eggs, pancakes, and Egg's Benedict. They also offer an excellent selection of breakfast cocktails, such as mimosa's and bloody mary's. Hattie's Hat has nearly saved my life before after a long night out with friends. Give it a try if you are in Ballard sometime.

I LOVE their Smoked Salmon Club. If you want to hang out in an unpretentious bar, have a stiff drink, and eat a good diner-style meal, then Hattie's is your place. I HEART Hattie's!

Ballard has changed so much in the past decade that at some points, it is unrecognizable. The Matador is bringing in the bridge, tunnel and expressway, meatmarket striped shirt crowd, so if that's not your bag, steer clear. You pass the new boutiques, renovated shops, expensive decor, and then you get a whiff of smoke, bourbon and omelttes as you pass Hatties and you sense the true spirit of old ballard. Hatties is holding down the old school flag and minus the repainted sign and back of the building, it hasn't changed much--step back in time. There are very few places where people of all backgrounds can sit together and have a drink, talk about random topics and have a good laugh. The breakfasts are great, the bartenders are awesome and the drinks are consistently strong. I miss the old 45 jukebox which had a copy of the Replacements "I'm in Trouble" and various Cash singles, but they still play great tunes.
