We discovered the 35th Street Bistro in Fremont almost by accident - my wife was looking up another restaurant on the Internet and came across a story about their new chef (Steve, formerly of Flying Fish). We decided to give it a try. And we were glad we did because it immediately became a new favorite.
I rarely eat at a restaurant where every main course on the menu looks great. This menu was one of these. Of the 6-7 main courses offered I would have been happy with any of them. Our waiter recommended the duck, which was outstanding. My wife had the risotto, which was also fantastic. Nice portion size and great presentation to boot.
The soup of the day was a curry crab and shrimp bisque. Lots of meat, just the right amount of spice. It was a big bowl and would have made a full meal in itself. I'm looking forward to the leftovers for lunch today.
For an appetizer we had the cheese collage - 5 cheeses accompanied by nuts, apples, fig puree. They serve it on a big board, with the cheeses placed opposite the recommended accompaniment (blue cheese across from apples and fig puree). Next time we'll get this for dessert because it's a little filling for an appetizer.
The wine list is broken up into wines by the glass and by the bottle. And unlike a lot of places the by the glass list is extensive. And that doesn't include the special pours.
I should also mention that the service is top notch. Attentive, but not overbearing. We never felt rushed.
During coffee Steve, the chef, came out to talk. He pointed out that the menu changes regularly, sometimes daily, based upon the ingredients available. That just made me want to go back more often in order to see what interesting things were there to tempt me.

This place seemed promising for its intriguing menu options, respectable philosophy re: local and organic foods, good location, and good atmosphere. It turns out it's one of those places I will never go again and will tell all my friends to avoid. When we, a party of four, came in on a Friday night, we were told there was a long wait even though there were plenty of tables open and two two-party groups waltzed on in without apparent reservations. After a covert monetary exchange with the maitre'd, we were miraculously seated with no further delay. Huh.
Things were still promising when we got our wine, which gave off the most enticing smells, but forbode a bad night when we tasted it and found it tasted totally cheap and one-dimensional. We would have left then had we known the wine was an omen. My dinner was good. I liked my trout a lot, mostly because I have a thing for Meyer lemons and fennel and it came with a Meyer-lemon sauce and braised fennel. Sadly, no one else was particularly enthused about their food. The mushroom risotto was deemed un-risotto-like and very bland.
It was a Friday, but, as I said, the place was hardly full and stayed that way throughout our meal. The waitress was unable to competently answer most of our questions about the menu and then was completely MIA after dropping off our food. We were centrally located, but it seemed we were invisible to the other staff as well. We practically had to tackle someone who was not our waitress to ask for the bill after we sat there for who knows how long. The bill came, but no one was interested in picking up our cards.
In the end, the only thing going for it was the ambiance. The restaurant's designer was smart to bring in the outdoors with the high ceilings, big windows, and large ficus in the room, but ambiance is not enough to bring me back for a repeat of this.

I've eaten here twice since it changed to the 35th St. Bistro and it's gross. I had a scallop appetizer which was inedible. It tasted rancid almost. My boyfriend ordered calamari which were also very unappetizing and tasted terrible. For my main dish I had a pasta dish which, after I only ate some of it we didn't even bother to take home because it was so bad. I was very disappointed by one of the worst meals I've ever had in Fremont and by how expensive that terrible meal was!!!! I won't go back again.

35th St Bistro is a really enjoyable dinner destination. The staff are warm and friendly. The interior is light and upbeat, but also comfortable and warming.
35th St Bistro excelled at the appetizer, desert and sides, however the entrees were quite unspectactular.
We tried to entrees, rabbit and salmon. The rabbit was a bit dry, however the mashed potatoes that came with it were extraordinarily good. The salmon, particularly fishy, was served over gnocci and roasted vegetables.
The honey roasted sweet potato soup, and pots de creme dessert were both very good, and will probably bring us back to try 35th St. Bistro again. Hopefully we'll have better luck with the entrees.

Lovely food, a tempting and diverse menu, incredible service, and an extensive wine list make this Fremont Bistro a favorite. We were greeted and happily seated in a tucked away corner with our 10-month-old daughter and out-of-town guest.
for starters we had the delicious:
Sauteed Calamari Gremolata $9
garlic, lemon zest, parsley
one of the best salads i have ever had:
Bistro Salad $6
iceburg lettuce, tomatoes, pancetta,
creamy blue cheese dressing, fried onion strings
the stellar entrees:
Oven Roasted Halibut $18
grilled asparagus, rhubarb reduction
Steak Frites $23
naturally raised beef, fresh horseradish,
haricots verts, hand-cut french fries
and the ridiculous Asparagus Risotto Stuffed Artichoke $16
grilled radiccichio, balsamic glaze
We polished off a perfect evening with:
Blueberry and White Peach Crumble
a la mode
and an insane
Chocolate Pots de Creme
rich chocolate custard topped with fresh whipped cream
The wait staff was kind to my daughter and very hospitable. We enjoyed every moment and every bite and will go back with reinforcements soon.
