We have celebrated two of our five wedding anniversaries at Canlis as well as my husband's birthday and a my Mom's visit from Boston. Canlis never disappoints. The service is IMPECCABLE, the view wonderful and the food is fantastic (read: chocolate lava cake.) I also give Canlis three cheers for having a male AND female wait staff - not something you always see at the country's finest restaurants. Canlis is a class-act.

Just got back from dinner with my wife for her bday. From the valet to the steak to the lava chocolate dessert and a glass of Oban 14 scotch, just perfect. they do things right and you feel as if someone has not forgotten the old school things that make a great restaurant. Car out front warmed up when you leave? You bet. Well done and that special occasion place but worth every dime.....

The piano playing in the background, the feeling of being high above, and the dim lighting is perfect for a
Romantic date with your significant other.
I've been to this restaurant at least 4 times, and each time I've been pretty pleased with the service and food. I love their mango/avocado salad with fresh crab meat drizzled with a vinegret. As for their main courses, try their Kobe beef, it's so soft, you can cut it with a fork! Totally good! Their Salmon is always a good and safe choice too.
If you really want to shower your date with extra attention on that special anniversay day or even planning a proposal, Canlis has a private dining room for you to book. It comes with your own waiter and your own music system. You can enjoy your dinner with your significant other w/o any interuptions or background noises! Best of all, in your private room, there is a telescope for you to look at the stars or the city. Great view and highly recommended if you're planning something special.

Well, if you are taking your parents out, there are a couple of traditional places that just reek of Seattle. Assuming you actually like them (your parents I mean).
The first is Canlis, we've been there a couple of times this year and the main thing is that the view is just spectacular. You overlook Union Bay and at night it is great.
The food has been considerably updated from the 80s and it is now really Pacific Northwest so should be fine for folks. And the wine list is superb.

Yes, the view is beautiful and food is great, but I was most impressed by the stand-out, attention to detail service that was reflected in all aspects of the meal.
First off, parking is valet only. They don't give you a valet card and they don't even ask you for your name. You are greeted inside by Chris Canlis, who asks for your name, checks on your reservation and somehow tells the valet staff to associate you with your car.
At the bar the waiter asks your name as you sit down and takes your order. The tab is automatically transferred to your table.
Our server paid equal attention to detail, however erred with our desert order (mistaking our pre-ordered Chocolate Lava cake for a Souffle). Our order takes extra-long in the kitchen, and once the mistake was discovered our order must have been given prioritized and was out in no time.
The Dungeness crab cakes were an absolute stand-out and a must try. The steak was cooked to perfection.
Our car was waiting for us at the door by the time we got there.
The restaurant definitely draws an older crowd.

I've actually never been there just for dinner. Its reputation as being old and stuffy with surf and turf just didn't sound interesting.
But we went there for a wedding reception and folks are right it is stuffy, but the view is spectacular. The food was surprisingly good for traditional fare.
I would say it is right to say it is for the older crowd.

Sure, it has an amazing view, the wine selection is amazing, but the food is mediocre.
If you want to sip wine while you lounge around and look at the nice view, then sure, go to Canlis...if you're in the mood for good food, great wine, and an overall great atmosphere, try: Daniel's Broiler, Ruth's Chris, or the Met...

Whenever my wife and I have something to celebrate, or even just want a really fantastic dinner out, Canlis is always at the top of our local restaurants to go to. The service is always top notch, the food is superb. The crabcakes are one of our favorites, and their entrees are always well prepared, well seasonsed, and thouroughly enjoyable.
An extensive wine list helps make the evening complete, as well a very tasty dessert menu. Plan dinner right around sunset to watch the amazing colors play across Lake Union as night falls to help set the mood for the rest of the evening.
It's spendy, but well worth it, every time.
One note: While it isn't necessarily a "black tux" restaurant, show respect for your fellow patrons, and your appreciation of the restaurant by dressing up a little bit. It's worth putting on that neck tie and nice shirt for.

As for location it has a wonderul view.
As for the food it was pretty good but you are paying TOP dollar for it. I have had some good seafood here.
Beware this is a place you will want to dress up for.
This place would be romantic with it posh surroundings and food but when we have gone it seems like alot of older folks.
They host an impressive wine list.
