I came down from Vancouver, Canada, to try the Sunday night swing dance with a live band at the Century and was most impressed. The main ballroom is absolutely lovely with the velvet drapes and the ornate detailing which underlines what a special place this is. The basic pre-dance swing lesson had my friend with no dance experience up and spinning on the floor quickly and easily. There is a bar/restaurant conveniently located near the ballroom itself and the live music was great. My only complaint was that there did seem to be quite a surplus of leads (men) especially compared to the Vancouver swing dance scene where there usually are more women. In fact, one had to very quickly find a following partner to dance with at the start of a new song because follows are snatched up quickly. Is this common in Seattle as I also noticed a high male/female ratio at a few Belltown bars I visisted???? As such, if I could describe myself as female, I would have given the Century a full "5" stars. As it is was, thanks for a swingtastically fun evening!!!! I will come back again next time I am in town.

I have to admit I'm biased -- I've been taking classes with Hallie Kuperman every couple of years since before she even owned the Century Ballroom. But to me it is the best place in Seattle to go for a romantic evening out. What could be better than having a nice dinner (the menu is limited, but everything I've had has been very good), white tablecloths and all, then twirling 'round the floor with your girl (or guy) in your arms? Despite being a lesbian-owned business on Capitol Hill, the Century is dominated most evenings by hetero couples. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I am very happy that Hallie recently added gay nights to the schedule. OutDancing happens on the third and fourth Friday of every month, and features a wide variety of dance music, from salsa and swing to two-step and disco. The crowd tends to be mostly women (including a lot of familiar faces from the Timberline, may it rest in peace), but there are several male regulars as well. There are plenty of people to fill the room with energy, but it is not nearly as crowded and sweaty as the popular salsa nights. Don't know how to swing? Scared by salsa? Not to fear. There are classes before each dance, as well as a regular schedule of classes that meet several weeks in a row, and the instructors are great.

I've been Salsa dancing here lots, and it's always crowded and the music is LOUD, but there are dancers of all levels and you can really dance the night away. The lesson before the dance is a nice warm up and lets you scout out partners beforehand. Be ready to SWEAT, it's hot! Oh, there's a bar, but I don't know how anyone can dance and drink -- go for the overpriced water (did I mention you SWEAT!)

Overall, I had a great experience at the Ballroom. We saw a live show there and had a fun time listening / dancing the night away. The dinner served prior to the show was nice, nothing fancy – but okay. I think the night depends greatly on the show, but we saw Bob Schneider and had a wonderful evening. A good date as well, a nice place with a little different than normal of a setting.

It’s hot, crowded, and a bit snobby compared to the dance clubs I’m used to in Florida. It’s got a tiny bar, and it doesn’t even have live music, but where else are you going to dance in Seattle? Capital Hill’s Century Ballroom is the only dedicated dance hall that I know of in the Seattle area with regular swing and salsa nights. My impression of the Seattle swing scene, from what I could gather at the Century, is that it is very unforgiving to newcomers and beginners. The salsa crowd, however, is much friendlier.

Last summer I was asked to be the best man for my best friends wedding. And because I'm such a good friend I agreed to accompany him to ballroom dance lessons. I was very nervous going to my first lesson. When I dance it looks like I'm in pain. The staff did an excellent job of putting me at ease and not making me feel like an ass. I may not be Fred Astaire, but I'm on my way. Great prices here, too.

Salsa nights at the Century Ballroom are fun and sweaty. All levels will probably feel comfortable here, and it's a good place to practice if you take classes there during the week. There are also swing nights and tango nights. There's no cover if you eat at the restaurant. It is very popular though, and thus can be VERY crowded.

You will learn a from a salsa course at the Century Ballroom. We took a salsa course from a community center and were lost on the dance floor, but after attending at the Century Ballroom, we could "strut our stuff." Classes are very large and you will rotate through partners, so you do not need a partner in order to sign up for the class. You also receive a video CD with the moves you will learn in the class - great for reviewing.
