I love going out to lunch, that is no secret, I especially love when I find a really good place. Agua Verde is one of those places. It is a cute little Mexican cafe, casual, at lunch, they serve cafeteria style - you order, pay and sit down, they bring you your food. Everything is uniquely healthy and fresh, delicious and what a view of the ship canal. The prices are decent, you can easily have lunch and a drink for under $10.

I had some pretty high hopes for this place. I had heard nothing but good things.. But from the moment I arrived it was nothing but misery. Am I really the only one that had an awful experience? ..or just a bad day for AV?
When I arrived I was greeted by a line going out the door which wasn't a surprise, I knew it would be busy. But the frustrating part was it was a line for people waiting to get drinks from the bar/window combined with people wanting a table and those just wondering how they get in. After we got all the way in we discovered we were going to have a 45 min wait we decided to get back in line and get a margarita and hang out (as many others seemed to be doing).
We did this only to find there is no place to "hang out". There is no bar or lounge area and there it is illegal to take your drinks outside and just walk around so you have to wait in this tiny crowded area and drink your drink. It was so unorganized. Just by looking around you could see how confused and frustrated many were at how the entrance operated.
When we finally got a table we found the service to be lackluster and were surprised that we had to order tortilla chips separately. The chips we received appeared to be the kind out of a bag at your local Safeway (not homemade).
We had fish tacos which were great but we both ordered with rice and beans and neither arrived with rice and beans (which also were extra).
The tacos themselves were great but certainly not good enough to warrant this headache.
The fresh lime margaritas were great but not worthy of a 7 dollar price tag considering they are literally the size of a shot glass!
I left AV frustrated and can safely say that I wont be back. I could see how this place might have been a "best kept secret" once upon a time but its hard to see that now. Its just too small for this kind of volume and way too unorganized. I would think they would profit greatly in customer satisfaction (and bar sales) if they somehow added a bar/waiting area.

I just went here last night and although I would've given it a great review before, I'm even more certain that this place rocks.
It's not only a great place to eat, but it's also a kayak club...so it rents kayaks!
Back to the food. Delicious. I had a yam taco (I usually get the mangodilla) which was so good. They have vegetarian options (and can make some things vegan upon request) too. Yummy drinks, both alcoholic and non. It's a loud place, so it's not for the subdued. It has a youthful feel to it and very vibrant colors. Sometimes there's live music as well.

I love coming here in the summer. They have delicious chips and salsa and margaritas and are right on the water. What more can you ask for on a summer evening! You can literally rent kayaks here and get in the water after dinner, though hopefully you haven't had too many of those margaritas. :)

Aqua Verde is usually packed with people throughout the day and for good reason too! You can walk if you are near the UW or you can drive - they have free parking! The Mexican food is delicious and so are their drinks - check out their extensive drink list which includes great house-made drinks. They have a great patio to sit outside on and to enjoy the view of the water. Or you can sit inside - sometimes its hard to find a seat, but once you do find one you can enjoy your chips and salsa from the yummy salsa bar.
I highly recommend the Mero Tacos and a Tuna-rita!
They also have a window outside that you can walk up to and order food from - if it's too packed inside and out on their patio I suggest ordering from the window and taking it around the corner to the picnic tables on the water.
See photo of us after finishing our tasty lunch!

Thats right - I will be so bold and to tell everyone that this is a fantastic establishment and that everyone should go..and not just to the restaurant but to the Kayak store below as well. Heres a plan for you: go and rent a kayak (UW students get a 15% discount) - they rent both single and double kayaks..singles being more expensive...then after exploring Lake Union and Lake Washington paddle back in and return your kayak..then immediately go upstairs and get some great Mexican food. They offer 3 different types of salsa at their salsa bar. And please - get the Halibut Fish Tacos!! They are superb!!!! Don't forget a tasty margarita on the side!! Enjoy a great day!

Truly great Mexican food. I grew up in South Texas, so after being here for 15 years, I'd totally given up on finding any good Mexican food (although Gordito's came close). I enjoy the atmosphere here too, and that the people who work there and own it are just good people and good cooks. Cheap, easy, reliable, tasty, convenient, clean. I'm ever so glad that they have an espresso stand outside and that they have Mexican chocolate!!! I can't seem to do it justice when I'm at home. I hope they stay in business a long time.
