I'd heard great things about Dilettante and finally went for dessert last weekend. My boyfriend got the flourless mocha cake and I got their special sundae with their special vanilla ice cream. Frankly I have no idea how anyone can eat this stuff. The ice cream tasted like Mylanta - chalky and inedible. The cake smelled and tasted like cheese (and I love cheese, but this shouldn't have tasted like that). I will never return. Truly horrible.

This is chocolate heaven and I don't think you'll find anyone with a complaint about the celestial dessert confections. I'm filled with lust for their chocolate mousse even as I type. And the interior is decorated in a rich, rococo style of deep color and silver curlicues that makes you want to surrender to the sweet ministrations of the chocolate gods.
The service, however, is almost ludicrously bad. The servers will ignore you, forget about you, go off shift and disappear, bring you someone else's food, or all of the above. I've actually stood at the counter trying to buy a couple truffles and had the clerk turn his back and take a personal phone call while I waited. If you're not in a hurry, and you don't object to the possibility of having to get up and physically locate a server and insist that he or she come to your table and help you, you can have a perfectly decent experience here.

On a whim after dinner on Valentine's Day, my husband and I meandered up to the Dilletante Chocolate Cafe on Broadway. The place was crowded, but they had a table for us. After about 15 minutes a very frazzled server came to the table, threw down two menus and then scrambled away. We got that it was busy, but a little personal service would have gone a long way. Hell, we already felt bad for the guy.
Our desserts were good. VERY chocolately, but we were going for that. I think in the whole time we were there we saw our server twice. Once when we got the menus, and once when we got the check. Kind of a bummer, but not so bad that we wouldn't go back.

The Olympic stuff is great by the way, you can ask a friendly restaurant guy about buying it. We haven't done that yet (mainly because we don't know what to do with 10 gallons of ice cream), but I think that is the best in town in reality. We can get ours from our friendly neighborhood restaurants. I can send you a name if you want.
Finally, I hate to bring it up, but we've made our own and if you've never had real vanilla with flower pedals ice cream made by yourself, you haven't lived. I can dig up the recipe but we had it one New Years and it was awesome.

OK, I admit it, maybe it was just the rainy day or the great conversation with long time Seattle friends, Jon and Hank, but we've been going to Dilletante Chocolates for 18 years now (how did I get so old!) and we still love it.
The absolute most amazing thing is their Coupe Dilletante. The thing is awesome and gigantic. The ice cream is just great and the "truffle guts" sauce is divine.
When you are there, stop over at the "other reason" we moved to Seattle, the Bailey Coy Bookstore!

If you don’t feel like sitting down, grab a few truffles to go. They sure hit the spot.
Also, Dilettante is also the perfect place to buy a birthday cake for that chocolate lover in your life.

Eat dinner somewhere else, then go to Dilettante Chocolate for dessert. The desserts are wonderful - I don't think you can go wrong here.
Plus, there's something very romantic about going here just for dessert, especially late in the evening.
Can be noisy, but once your desserts arrive, the sound will fade.
As was said above, take a date here. It works.

I am an absolute dessert fiend and chocolate is my favorite of all, so I am sure you can imagine the intensity of my love for Dilettante. I do not generally buy their individual chocolate pieces--I go in for a slab of cake and one of their many chocolate drinks, my favorite being the simple chocolate soda (a rich chocolate syrup + soda water). They also serve a small menu of cafe food, including the most wondrous beet salad that has ever entered my mouth. They recently opened a small "Mocha Cafe" in Westlake Center which is kind of like a Dilettante-Express. All of the salads and what not are made freshly, but pre-packaged and it's more of an espresso bar than a restaurant--you can sit down, but it's not a sit-down restaurant like the Capitol Hill store. Note: the chocolate sodas are much better at the Mocha Cafe AND the items on the menu are cheaper.

While I enjoy their dark chocolates, I recently found that the carmels were hard, stale. Truffles are my truly favorite chocolate indulgence and you just cannot beat the local Fran's (U Village) for freshness, and just plain divine!
If were going to ingest these kind of calories they'd better be the best, right???

This place gets packed on Friday and Saturday nights, but it's worth waiting a few minutes for a table. The desserts are fantastic and fresh. I recommend the chocolate mousse-it's so rich you can hardly get through it all. They have great drinks and espresso, too. A good post-theatre spot or date night location!
