As other Judy's Book denizens have noted, H&H these are not (I think H&H bagels run a little sweet myself, but that's another review), but Bagel Oasis is the place to go in Seattle for reall boiled bagels, not those crazy puffy circular dinner rolls that pass for bagels at some national chains I won't name here. Give 'em a try, and let me know if you find better hereabouts...

The Oasis tries, but for some reason, like every other store in Seattle that bakes bagels, they just don't stack up. I have eaten bagels all over the east coast and midwest. In fact, Ive eaten a sh@tload of bagels in my day. Sometimes with cream cheese, other times with egg and often plain and toasted. I would put fresh H&H bagels out of NY at the top of my list. The bagels in seattle are small, and never seem to have that homemade LOVe. Please help me: if you know of a great bagel, send me a message. thanks in advance.

I absolutely love Bagel Oasis bagels. They are the best bagels I've had in Seattle. And yet on another level, I hate the Bagel Oasis. The service there is terrible. I can't tell you the number of times I have waited forever just to have a bagel toasted. And a year or two ago, they "remodeled" and the place looks worse inside. It was done on the cheap and the plywood booths are awful. Get your bagels to go and enjoy them at home.

Located in Ravenna, on NE 65th, Bagel Oasis bakes their goods fresh on the premises. These are more traditional-style bagels with traditional flavors (think garlic, salt, egg, poppyseed, rather than sundried tomato feta). The bagels are a denser variety than you'll find in grocery stores and some other bagel places in Seattle. They are very filling. Sandwiches are also available and you can eat in or take out. However, the store isn't open in the evening.

The closest thing to real bagels and bialys in Seattle that I've found is Bagel Oasis. They steam their bagels, which gives them that authentic, strange chewy but not too chewy texture that bagels are supposed to have. I love their bialys too. (Is that how you pluralize bialy? It looks so strange...) I drive miles to get these as opposed to succumbing to what Noah's claims is a bagel. It's close to Whole Foods, so you can always stop there while doing high end grocery shopping, if that's your thing. Apparently there's also a cafe in Madison Valley called My Place or something that flies in bagels from New York - if you're desperate for the real real thing, that may be your next best bet.

If you are a fan of 'new york' style bagels, then the Bagel Oasis is for you. Their bagels are hot out of the oven when you arrive in the morning. The texture is chewy. The taste is delicious. If you are a cream cheese fan they make their own which is much, much better than what you can find at the grocery store. They also have nice seating area if you want to eat there. I know they have lots of sandwiches, however I've never tried any of them. It's a very family friendly place. They have high chairs, booster seats and toys for kids.

Bagel Oasis has the only really good bagels I've come across in Seattle. Noah's? Please - they're just inflated bread rolls. Oasis bagels are boiled, are a reasonable size (not huge) and have that nice brown crust on the outside. The only downer is that they're physical space is dark and kind of dingy. But who cares? Take your bagels home. I drive across town to get them and they're worth it.
