The clam chowder is ok, but I've tasted better. Sorry...
I find their prices high, but stop in when I want to some consistently good 'fast food' seafood dishes. I like their consistency from shop to shop.
Atmosphere is usually airy and welcoming. Prices are somewhat high.

White Chowder is a classic add Halibut'n Chips and you have yourself a deligtful lunch. Don't eat the chips feed the gulls! - I love it.

Before we moved here, any visit to Seattle are would require a stop at Ivar's for the clam chowder. The best for atmosphere is obviously this one on the Pier for the full experience.

The food is kinda pricy and I don't think it's worth what I'm paying for. Their food is nothing special and can be had at most seafood places, what I think really stands out though is their clam chowder. Maybe I'm picky because I've been spoiled from living in Seattle...but with all honesty, a lot of people DO enjoy Ivars.
It's good if you need something to get to feed a bunch of people that aren't super picky.

The food is definitely not worth the money spent. It was a little too greasy and had no taste. While Ivars is known as something to visit while in Seattle, you should trully consider going up to Pike Place and eating somewhere up there! Even hike up to Westlake center or Pacific Place and enjoy some of the many restaurants they have to offer.

There’s something to be said about understanding the process at an Ivar’s bar. You feel like an insider. Like a local (which I am).
This is how it works:
You are in line, three or four (or five, depending on how busy they are) from the cashier. Suddenly the cashier hollers at you something like, “What’ll it be?”
Now if you aren’t expecting this you might not notice that your up to “order” or you say, I can wait, or something to the effect that you don’t know what’s going on.
At this point your response should be for the items from the fryer. I’d say, “A three piece.” So the idea here is to get your order going as soon as possible to shorten the wait time. Then when you reach the counter to pay you order your drink and chowder.
Some people have a preference on chowder. I like them all. The white is creamy and slightly smoky. The red is a tangy and creamy chowder. The salmon is rich and smoky. Their tarter sauce is the best; I buy the jars (available in grocery stores) for home too. I like all of the fish on the menu, except I really prefer to have salmon grilled vs. deep fried.
The French fries haven’t changed much over the years. They are big slices of potato fried just enough to warm them. After sitting for several minutes they get soggy. I think they originally designed the fries this way so you wouldn’t feel a whole lot of remorse feeding them to the gulls and ducks, which is a common thing to do and Ivar encouraged it.
Pier 54 is the busiest fish bar, and they have the most seagulls. Visit their web site:

Ivar's has really good, really cheap fish and chips which you can purchase at a stand and eat by the waterfront. There is one downside to doing this: the seagulls all come and beg, and a lot of people toss fries at them, which can get really annoying as the fries (and gulls) come closer and closer to where you are sitting.

Sorry Ivars. A staple in seattle but extremely low quality preparation of seafood and very high prices for just tourist type food. Ivars at the pier is what im talking about. There is way too much breading used for their fried food and you walk away wondering what you paid for as your grabbing extra napkins to dab off the grease dripping from your fried concoction. Ivars puts on a great firworks show every fourth though - kudos for that.
