Checka Looka is everything you want a local surf shop to be. The guy who runs the place is super nice, overflowing with enthusiasm about surfing. This is a good place to rent boards and wetsuits for your first time surfing as their rates are some of the best in town, and much cheaper than out on the coast. The shop has a decent array of boards for sale, as well as some used short boards. They sell wetsuits and rash guards, along with the usual apparel. Overall a great shop with none of the usual attitude.

This gallery, located in pioneer square, is a fabulous showcase of top notch NW coast artwork. Pieces range from tiny stone carvings to totem poles and masks. for most people, this gallery is eye candy for traditional and contemporary artwork and for collectors, it is probably the best in the state. i have not found the staff to be as chatty as those in galleries in Vancouver, B.C. but they are informative and willing to explain the significance of various pieces. i enjoy taking visitors through this gallery and love the contemporary spin demonstrated in many works. previous years' lecture series have been wonderful, the website suggests they will resume in the fall of 2005.

More
When I first heard about SkyHawks soccer camp I thought it seemed kind of crazy to send a seven year old to a camp where they do nothing but play soccer six hours a day, five days a week. I fully expected that by the second day my daughter would complain that she was tired of soccer and didn't want to go anymore. In fact, it was quite the opposite, and she came away the last day saying she couldn't wait to go again next year.
The coaches are young and energetic and they make sure the kids have a lot of fun in addition to learning strong soccer skills.

View Ridge Park boasts large grassy areas with sun or shade from which to choose, a seasonal wading pool, and a large playground with climbing equipment, slides and swings. One of the great things about this park is that the wading pool is shaded and there are plenty of places to lay out your blanket on the grass and hang out. Doesn't get too crowded either.

This is one of the most amazing art galleries I have ever been to. It has some awesome and unique art pieces as well as glass artifacts. You can walk through feeling amazed that something like it is possible. The studio that they make that art in is actually located in the back where the artists sit and work hard all day long creating masterpieces.

More
In a time when kids sports are becoming increasingly driven by the egos and desires of adults, Magnolia Soccer club is pleasantly kid-focused, particularly at the younger ages (5-8). The two priorities are: (1) learning skills and (2) having fun. All kids, regardless of skill level, can enjoy making new friends, getting exercise, and ending the season as a better player than when they started.
The club offers free clinics, great training for coaches, and even trains its own older kid players to become referees for the younger kids. It's a great community builder.

More
If you live in Seattle city limits, chances are there's a Seattle Public Library branch within a mile or two of your house. Do yourself a favor and check it out -- the public library here is really outstanding.
There's been a library building and renovation boom, and many local libraries are in brand new or newly refurbished spaces, with comfortable chairs, computer terminals and beautiful spaces. Free wi-fi is in most or all of them.
Although local branches have limited selections, you can "hold" anything in the system (books, CDs, DVDs, tapes) and have it delivered to your local branch. Convenient, though there can be a bit of a wait on new or popular materials.
Of the places I've lived, SPL is one of the best library systems I've seen.

St. Edward's Park used to be a monastery but has since been converted to a playground and park. The Grotto, a scenic little corner of the park tucked under some trees, can be rented out for receptions and weddings. My housemate had her wedding here and it was just such a beautiful space- very intimate and earthy.

More
Pro Mountain Sports is a specialty backpacking and mountaineering shop that sells carefully selected gear. The focus is on light weight gear that perfectly suits the needs you have. The shop staff are fantastic and very knowledgeable. If you are unsure of what is best, just go in and chat for a while. For the serious climber, this is the place to come to lighten your load. The shop is located near the UW and is open on Saturdays, which makes it all too convienient.
