We love it!!! We have had a wonderful year coming to the Storybook Acting class at Urban Monkeys for our group of 4-5 year olds. Our kids wait all week for this amazing, dynamic class with the very sweet instructor, Mara, who all the kids love (we carpool 5 kids from the same preschool). When they get in the car they are so excited to go to Urban Monkeys and when they arrive they run in laughing, playing, screaming with excitement! They always want to get there before the class starts to run around in the lobby and play with the toys, balls and puppets. Then, Mara comes out and they get to pick an animal that the group turns into as they line up for class. For instance, they have been worms, crawling their way into the large gym classroom.
The environment is friendly, its a truly beautiful, well-lite space. I love to sit in the lobby and soak in the sun that pours in from the huge windows (when we have it in Seattle!) with my toddler as he plays with the toys while my daughter is in class. The owners greet me every time -- very nice people -- and the other people who work at the desk are delightful!! When the children get out of class (smiling, running happily), they get to color a picture to take home that relates to the book that was read and acted out during class. It is truly one of the best moments of our week to go to Urban Monkeys!! We are so grateful that a unique space like this was created for our kids to enjoy!!

What a great concept! I don't have children (yet) but I can't wait to take them here. Can adults play around as well?

Good, not great. I had heard great things, but was a little disappointed when my husband and I took our 1 1/2 and almost 4 year old boys for a visit. We were expecting lots of climbing jungle gyms, etc. The boys enjoyed it because there are lots of balls to throw around, but after a while they got bored. It's a cool concept because there is free internet access, media center, free coffee/tea, manicures, spa, etc. for the adults. It's just that you can't do any of these things without paying extra for for childcare (for children under 2 yrs.), which consists of a yoga class, music class, etc. These classes are above and beyond the $199 annual membership. I think it's great for super busy parents who both work, but if 1 parent is at home or you have a very flexible I don't think it's worth the money. There are lots of other great options out there!

This is the neighborhood east of Elliot Bay - just head up the hill on Yesler from downtown and you are there. The heart of the I.D. is Uwajimaya, which is a superb international grocery store. Check out the fish.
Spend a day in this neighborhood, and plan to browse the restaurants until you see something that catches your fancy. Granted, you won't find any chain restaurants, like PF Chang's, but hopefully you are there in the first place for something more authentic.
The I.D. is good fun on Chinese New Year, too!
