The view of downtown Seattle really doesn't get any better than at Gas Works Park. Come here on a sunny weekend day to watch the sailboats on Lake Union, or at sunset to see the sun disappear behind Mount Olympus and the city lights come up, one by one. On a windy day, bring a kite. Be sure to check out the big funky sundial at the top of the hill.
It's a fascinating place to watch people, too. Morris dancers practice here on summer evenings, and skateboarders grind on the concrete. Sun worshippers and kite flyers are well represented.

We do family pictures at Kubota Gardens almost every Fall..... It is absolutely gorgeous, very lush foliage, and very few crowds to interrupt..... You can check their website for details, http://www.kubota.org but the story goes something like this. Kubota was a Japanese immigrant, and skilled gardener from Japan. He bought the 20 acre property in the South end to use, essentially, as a showpiece for his gardening skills and marketing piece for his business as a landscape designer. When he died, this acclaimed Japanese garden was donated to the City of Seattle and has been operated as a treasured city park since then. I think it is one of the best kept - too well kept - secrets in Seattle. (Personally, I think it is WAY better than the Japanese Gardens in the arboretum.) I think you may have to pay a small fee to have "professional" photos taken, but the money would go to the park and its upkeep. We always just have a family friend take our photos, so it isn't a big deal.

I love this playground and wading pool - they are right next to each other. They're enclosed (for the most part), and they have age appropriate play equipment! You can have one who just learned how to walk as well as your 7 year old with you, and they would both be happy and safe!
The only downfall is the sometimes unsupervised company. When my son had just learned to walk, he was toddling in the pool and some wild child poured a bucket of water on his head. He ran off without an apparent parent in sight! Since, I've noticed that since it's right in the center of a city of apartments, parents will send their children down to "play" - but, in the end it's worth it - just steer clear of them...

I grew up in west seattle and it was the place to hangout as there was lots of violence deeper into west seattle. the scenery is really nice as you get to see all of downtown. when the sun sets and things quiet down, you see seattle buildings light up. great places to eat also, and there are tons of women.

It's a great park to run through and it is located on the cliff of the the beach. Take a run through it's amazing trails. Soak in the sun from the cliff as it sets in the horizon. Or simply ride your bike through the technical sections of trails. It is also a great place to have parties as they have a few shelters for you to do so. I've seen a few tennis courts and baseball parks. Give it a try, the best in west seattle hands down.

Carkeek is one of my favorite parks in Seattle. You are literally only a few blocks from Northgate Mall, and yet you can wader the extensive trail system and forget that you are in the city at all! There are places to play and picnic, and the beach is wonderful…not crowed, with great views and that romantic train trestle. In the summer, the volunteer naturalists will tell you all about the beach critters!

If you live in Seattle proper, Magnuson Park near Sandpoint/U-District is great! They have an area for the small and shy, as well as a huge area for the big and brave. The larger area includes acess to the water for swimming, which is great for those that like to swim and fetch sticks, balls and the like.
If it is absolutely disgusting out, Go Great Dog on Roosevelt offers fun runs every Saturday. 30lbs and over is from 11:45-1:15, while the smaller breeds are from 1:30-3. The charge is $3 per dog, but it is worth its weight in gold when its more than a little nasty outside...

I think this National Park is half a national park, with the other half in Alaska. The exhibits are as interesting, or more so, than most small historical museums. some areas and exhibits don't look inviting to the general public, and I assume that they are explained on a Field Trip by a Ranger or Docent then. the Interactive comuter kiosks seem a waste of technology, for it's just a multiple-choice quiz. Exhibits on the great fire, too.

More
If you live in the Ravenna neighborhood and have kids you should know about this community center. They host classes and open gyms but also in the afternoons they have a play space open for little tykes. For just a couple bucks the kids have access to plastic cars, slides, books- all indoors out of the rain. Careful though- gets crowded on gloomy days.
