The ballard locks are a wonderful place to take you kids. They have a beautful garden and a fish ladder. I enjoyed the tour that they gave us, with information on the history of the garden and facts about the locks. I really liked seeing the boats come in from the sea and raise 20+ feet to fresh water in Lake Washington. It's amazing how they can move the water so fast. Give yourself a couple of hours to see everything.

The Ballard Locks is a popular place to go to watch all the different boats that go through, and how the locks work to separate the fresh water from the salt water and vice versa. It consists of locks and a dam. If you walk further down, you will find a fish ladder and a little room where you can see the fish through thick glass windows as they swim underwater.

I have lived near the locks all my life, and have always been fasinated with it. It is so much fun to just go and spend a relaxing day there watching boat traffic and the fish go through the latter, and the occassional train rolling over the nearby trainbridge. Discovery Park (Magnolia Side) and Golden Gardens Beach (Ballard Side) are very close as well. Hit up all of these places to make your day perfect.
Pros: fun, interesting, free

The locks are a must see to explain the constant water level of the lakes versus the tide action of the oceans.
