Our dogs love going to Bark. How can they complain? They walk in and one of the friendly staff gives them a treat and immediately starts rubbing their ears. Not only are they friendly at Bark but the staff is always ready and willing with recommendations for whatever dog food is the latest and greatest. One of my dogs has a weight problem and we always go to Bark to get him his diet food there. The prices are on par with other pet stores in town. They stand above the rest by their kind, courteous service.

I have always found what I needed at my local petco. The employees are always friendly and helpful and the store offers a discount card to all customers which really cuts back on prices(especially for food). More importantly they carry many different brands of cat and dog food which can make it much easier to feed a picky pet. They also carry a wide range of scratching posts for cats and toys for dogs. I also noticed a large section of the store set aside for birds, fish, hamsters, etc. Reasonable prices, many locations, great customer service-Petco seems to have it all.

Central Bark is a great place to take your dog for a day of fun at doggy daycare. They offer a full range of services besides doggy day care. You can board you dog, get it groomed and even training. They separate the dogs by temperment so no need to worry about fido getting beat up. They used to have a doggy cam, but I don't think they have that anymore. You can also hold a doggy birthday party by renting out the downstairs room. This is great because you don't have to worry about a ton of dogs ruining your house. Check them out

The Idea pet stop is a nice little neighborhood pet shop with items available for a wide variety of animals, from cats and dogs to small mammals to birds, fish and reptiles.
This is sort of a combination pet supplies shop and pet shop itself, and it is not uncommon to stop in and find a littler of puppies waiting to be adopted inside.
My main experience with this shop, aside from general browsing and picking up the occational animal treat was when one of my fish seemed to have a disease. I went into the shop, described the symptoms, and the very friendly and helpfull woman at the front desk was able to identify the problem and give me a treatment (that worked.)
Whether or not you need something, it is a fun place to stop in and look at all of the animals.

Great, friendly and knowledgeable staff. I recommend going frequently (every 2-3 days) to see the dogs available for adoption. Small/medium-sized dogs and puppies get adopted quickly.
They'll let you take the dog you like for a walk and then you can decide on the process. There is a short application form but they are not ridiculous about it. They are mainly concerned that the animal will get a good home.

We have one very skittish, xenophobic cat, Mia. My fiance mostly raised her, and he raised her in the same loving way he raised his other cat, but somehow Mia always seemed to be much more skittish and very suspicious of people's best intentions even to pet her. She's a long haired cat who had some bad knots and tangled hair - my fiance was convinced we needed to shave her (she would become very scratchy when he tried to comb her knots).
Thanks to Lori's recommendation http://www.judysbook.com/members/37756/questions/4165/ we found Victoria at Looking Good Grooming, who seemed to have the magic touch! Not only did she say Mia gave her no trouble, she shampooed Mia and combed out all the tangled knots, so she didn't have to be shaved! I don't know how she did it, but Mia came out smelling nice, shiny haired, with a cute bandana around her neck, calm and happy :-)
Needless to say, without all the knotted hair tugging her skin, Mia is a much happier cat now. So worth $40+tip we paid. If your cat/dog is also scratchy, they also cut nails for $5, and/or apply Soft Claws http://www.softclaws.com/ for $20, I think. Thank you Victoria, and we will be back!

More
I have a medium sized dog (Jake) at 65 lbs and 2 "Jerk Russell Terrorists" at 14.5 and 18lbs. Small dogs can be good in some aspects because if your dog is getting out of line you can always pick it up and move it. With larger dogs that's harder to do. However, we find that our little dogs are generally more aggressive, bark more, and require more entertainment.
Why is this? Part of it is that JRT's were originally bred and trained for hunting - foxes, badgers, rats, and more. Understanding that the word "terrier" comes from the word "terroir", meaning ground, lets you in on their usual problems such as digging. Little dogs have lots of energy. We joke that the JRT's have 2 speeds, on and off - there is no middle ground. If they aren't tearing around the yard or house they are usually napping. One friend has a JRT that we jokingly say turns all houses into a skateboard park for dogs.
The folks at Canine Behavior Center put it best when they say, "a tired dog is a good dog." Usually a minimum of 2 miles of walking each day is good for most pets but in the teen years of dogs you might need a little more. Jake used to need up to 5 or 6 miles of jogging when he was around 2 yrs old to keep him calm. Now that he's 11 he can get exhausted doing 2 miles of walking. I took Jake and all of our JRT's to their classes. They are held in Bellevue and they do a remote class through the Phinney Neighborhood Association. It's really worth it. Usually the class spans about 9 weeks, meeting only 1 night per week for about an hour. You're expected to do training exercises throughout the week to show skill building at each session. It's basically a "train the trainer" type of thing but that's the real catch - it's the owners that need to be willing to train and be consistent with the pet.
Crate training can help to potty train your dog and will provide them a safe place in your home if the dog were to get stressed. It also helps to train for traveling.
How much does a dog cost to own? Well, it depends... is your dog a purebred that has common ailments in its breed? Many purebreds aren't as healthy as mixed pets because of inbreeding. Pets can get the same illnesses as humans, or at least their own version of them, and there is no knowing what may happen over the years of your relationship with a pet when that may or may not occur.
My cat, Morrey, is pretty healthy and he's 19 (I've had him since he was 8). He usually has his annual physical but last year we had a lot of visits to the vet because he decided to take off out of a 2nd story window and ended up with casts on his 2 front legs and with 4 months of treatment. Is he worth it? Yes.
Our previous JRT was found to have a heart problem and we had to give him 2 pills a day for it. There were yearly EKGs and medication costs. In the end, we only had Russell for 2.5 years because he had a heart attack when we weren't home. I still say every dime spent on him, and every rug he ruined during potty training, was worth it because he had the personality of a superstar and we loved him.
Adopting a pet is a huge commitment that comes with a lot of responsibility. Do so with the understanding that this is a life that you are taking into your care.

This is a pet supply store with an emphasis on higher-quality foods and pet supplies.
I am only familiar with the West Seattle store, but I go there for all my needs. The people remember me and my dog, and they have a strong knowledge of their products.
They also have cats for adoption there in the store, as well as occasional fundraising notices for animals in need.
