I was thrilled to discover City People’s several years ago as a non-chain resource for garden tools and other hardware. When, only a few years later, "True Value" appeared on their sign, I was devastated. However, there’s more to avoiding chains than keeping large corporations from running independent stores out of business; there’s also the personal aspect. If you simply can’t stand the soul-draining experience of shopping at Eagle and Home Depot, City People’s is a wonderful alternative.
[Added after reading Latife’s review:]
Clearly this store is not the answer for everyone! Admittedly, I haven’t shopped here in several months, but I know exactly what Latife means about the kind of staff that frowns on your every move. I’m sorry to hear about this and only hope these employees will be replaced by others who make the customers feel more welcome—or else by a management that provides an atmosphere in which employees and customers are all much happier.

Walking into Peter Norris is walking into the most beautiful garden shop in the world, where if you had enough cash you could come away with everything for your patio you would need to have the loveliest fantasy patio in Seattle. They have fountains, garden pots (thousands of 'em), huge glass vases, candles galore, teak furnishings (tables, chairs, etc.), paintings, gifts and everything else one could imagine. Plus, we were offered a latte upon entering the showroom! Gotta love that! We came away with one table, but plan on saving up for that huge 3-tiered fountian/birdbath and coming back to get it just as soon as we can possibly afford it! They will also stage your home when you go to sell it if you want them to. We actually saw a home in Madrona that they staged and it was fabulous! What a great store! Very friendly and knowledgeable staff.

We used to have two of the Cape Code Comfy Adirondack chairs and foot stools and I loved them. When we sold our house and moved into a condo we gave them away but if we ever have another place to put outdoor furniture I will definitely by two more. I have looked at many adirondack chairs, lots of places have them, but they are never as comfortable as the Cape Code Comfy's. The design is always slightly different. The Cape Code Comfy's have the perfect shape on the back and on the seat that contours to your body shape. They are the best!

I order (and paid a 50%) deposit on a gas fireplace 4/23/06. They said it would be here in 3 weeks, and guaranteed delivery by June 1st. Sure enough, June 1st came around and no fireplace, no phone call. They returned my call, and promised it would be here tomorrow. But, once again, they didn't have it here on the 2nd either. When I called again, they said it won't arrive until the following week. I'm still waiting. Don't listen to any of their guarantees, it doesn't mean anything.
