The Showbox is my favorite venue to see shows in Seattle (though I hear good things about the Firehouse). The place is a lot less smoky than El Corozone (or whatever they are calling it these days) and they have some pretty decent bands there, including the most rocking Mighty Mighty Bosstones show on the coast. Check it out.

Friends of friends started me going here. It can get a bit sleazy on the weekends, but it's such a great space that who cares? Afterhours is hopping, pours are strong, and most of my favorite locals have spun here. If you want some serious culture shock, check out Saturday's Russian night.

I love going to the fenix, only on the weekends though. It doesn't draw too much of a crowd during the week but on the weekend, esp. during the summer months it is alot of fun. I would have to agree that after the earthquake in 1999 it hasn't been the same. But they did a great job making it bigger and more dance floor space. You can actually get a seat since there is a ton a places to sit now. Also plenty of room to dance with two dance floors. Go when there is a good live cover band and you won't be disappointed.

This is my favorite music venue in town. The lineup they get is fantastic (if you like folksy, rockabillie type music)- you can just show up any night and likely be pleased. It isn't pretentious like some venues, smoking is prohibited on the music side of the room, and corn stalks hang from the ceiling. Hank Williams Wednesdays are a hoot--covering tunes and offering a two step dance venue. You can catch dinner in Ballard (La Carta, Madame K's) and make a night of it.

I recently had the pleasure to visit Jazz Alley to hear Stanly Jordan play a solo set.
Jazz Alley is probably one of the best all jazz venues I have ever set foot into. The entry fee is very affordable (most shows range $20-$30). I have seen the same artists play at Blues Alley in Washington DC for 3 times the price.
Reservations are recommended in advance although walk ins are welcome due to availability. Reservations can be made by phone, on line, or tickets can be purchased via Ticketmaster (although not recommended due to outrageous ticketmaster fees).
The sound in this place is fantastic and there seems to be not a bad seat in the house.
The food is ok and overpriced but to be expected for this type of venue. The drinks are reasonably priced and a limited scotch list is available.
If you are a looking for a place to see a great jazz show, Jazz Alley truly is the premier venue for jazz in the Pacific Northwest.
See you all at the Ahmad Jamal show.

Neumo's is decorated in what can only be called an "evil clown" motif. I'm not sure what that has to do with indie rock, but there you are. It's a small place, and during sold-out shows it can be just short of impossible to move around the main floor. Sight lines are not great for those under five-foot-five, and the balcony fills up fast, so arrive early. The environment (of slightly tipsy Capitol Hill pubcrawlers) can feel a little artificial, and some evenings is downright depressing. All this aside, the venue has lots of good qualities: their calendar is consistently filled with (mostly) interesting new acts, and features occasional visits from influential rock veterans. The security guys are alert and no-nonsense and seem to keep obnoxious drunks in check. Tickets tend to be much cheaper than events at The Showbox. Worth several visits.

There. I said it. Their fries rule. None of these big slabs of potato sopping with grease that other pubs try to pass off as fries. These are slender, crisp, and sprinkled with herbs and parm. Yum! And there's plenty of stout beer to wash them down.

Croc. the bar is mellow and quiet. show room is small enough to be intimate, big enough to hold crowds for most shows. the stage is elevated so everyone can see what's going on. it's grungy and dirty, but not scary like the old graceland. it always sounds great. they serve food. the beers are good - and pretty cheap. and they consistently book the best local talent -- any given night you're bound to like some or all of the lineup.
For the record, Showbox is the worst venue in Seattle. always over-crowded, always sounds crappy, always full of drunken uw packs, always grumpy bouncers, horrible restroom locations, never able to see anything on the stage b/c the floor isn't angled enough. i have banned the showbox for life (except for the calexico show this summer, for which i was forced to make a single exception because i expect the crowd will all be courteous and over 25).
