Emerald City Guitars is a crazy shop in Seattle that sells great guitars. They have many used guitars that are awesome. Their prices are slightly higher than other places, but the other places just don't carry as many of these awesome vintage guitars that Emerald City Guitars carries. They are always burning incense in the shop too and they carry various rock oddities.

What can I say about one of my fave West Seattle shops?
The Horton Heat Hash is the best breakfast item in all of Seattle. The prices on the CDs (new and used) are very good. They are competitive with Amazon.com and NO shipping fees! The staff is fun and hip. The metal section is expansive and not shoved in with the rest of the standard Rock catologue. Coffee is ok but the espresso is better. Hamburgers are quite nice. Just go if you haven't and support local businesses.

I recently helped out at a non-profit fund raiser by running their AV setup. Shortly before the presentation was about to being the projector shut off all by itself. It powered back on after a moment, but I was concerned enough to call AV Pro, the folks they rented from, to see if this was a known issue. The employee who answered my call spent more than 15 minutes on the phone with me walking me though troubleshooting ideas. He felt confident that it was probably a glitch in the power (old building) but gave me a cell phone number for someone who was standing by to rush a replacement projector out to our event.
This all seems like it should be standard behavior for a rental service, but we all know it isn't. I was pleasantly surprised by the immediate attention as well as the sincerity of their concern for our event to run smoothly.
I wasn't involved in the rental process, so I can't speak to their equipment selection or prices. But based on their support I'd highly recommend checking them out if you need to rent projectors or sound systems.

More
One of the great small, independently-owned record/CD stores in Seattle - you'll find an unbelievable selection of real treasures for such a small location. There are a number of reasons for this:
One great dynamic of this store is their customers - people who actively participate in, and support the real live music scene. While there is no anti-pop snobbery here, it's not uncommon to meet both casual parents or gift buyers as well as collectors there with thousands of titles in their own library of music. I've met collectors of world music, classic rock, jazz, local-music scene, music historians, academics, music-reviewers, editors and quite a few musicians of varying celebrity browsing through the bins. This makes a huge difference in the quality of used music inventory - enthusiasts have eclectic taste and provide a regular supply of great trade-ins!
The nature of the small store is also such that strangers often find themselves in conversation with each other, talking about shared interests in music, while they search for things they haven't heard.
It's a great place to be a customer, as of course you can listen to stuff before you buy it, but you can find well organized selection of stuff you have never heard of, and the owners will certainly help you hunt down hard to find selections. The nature of their customers makes it possible to network your way into finding a particularly rare recording or release.
While I've found most of Seattle's other independent music stores are staffed primarily with kids who have a prejudice toward new, hip music and pop culture - at the Landing you'll find a more relaxed, open-minded environment that welcomes toddlers, teens, parents and grandparents equally.
Disclaimer - I used to moonlight here back in 1994, before the current owners bought this cool little store on Roosevelt and 64th by Whole Foods. Today, I am still a regular customer. So, if you still like to touch your music before you buy it, and have something to show for your purchase other than a playlist, stop by The Landing and check it out!

This used-CD store pays more for your CD’s than any other that my husband and I have tried in Seattle or the Bay Area. Most give about a dollar per CD, and Half Price has stopped buying them at all, but Rubato typically gives at least $2 and often $4. In addition, they have a high-quality selection, with more classical CD’s than most used-CD stores, and the staff is very friendly.

Silver Platters is the best of several options in the area to browse for CDs and buy music and movie DVD's and videocassettes. The staff is helpful and even looked up a movie on the web for us when they didn't have it in their catalog. We easily spent an hour or so browsing through their offerings. They have many headphones on which you can samples music offerings. Access is easiest heading south on Southcenter Boulevard.

More
Our family's lives have been forever enriched by the fabulous musical programs available at the Suzuki Institute. Children as young as 4 can begin with a "sing and play" class to familiarize themselves with music sounds, ryhthm, and music theory. These classes are fun games that are interactive and instructional, but children are joyfully engaged and really have no idea that they are learning!
The Institute has many supportive instructors in both piano and strings, who have a passion and patience for teaching children. Kids have two lessons each week, one individual and one group lesson, and several recitals a year. One of our boys had piano instruction for 6 years before moving on to trumpet, our other is in his 6th year of violin. This school does teach children to read music, although I understand that some strict advocates of the "Suzuki method" do not.
There are other organizations like the Music School of the NW, just off Aurora on about 90th, that also have children's music programs. They also might be a good resource for finding teachers in your area. Good for you for helping to bring music into your child's life!

For a great selection, and a purely funky experience, go to Bud's Jazz Records in Pioneer Square. You'll hear the music from the sidewalk. Just walk down the stairs off of S Jackson and enter the groove of Bud's. This store carries only the real thing - bebop, swing, etc. If you're looking for what they play on that smooth jazz station, forget it!
