If you are an acoustic musician, your local Guitar Center may not give you the right kind of romantic feeling. Dusty Strings in downtown Fremont is one of those hidden treasures that just makes you want to play. It's not easy to find parking in Fremont, especially on the weekend. But you'll find that Dusty Strings has an expert staff and a collection of acoustic instruments that are second to none. This place exudes craftsmanship and quality. You'll find guitars to dulcimers, whistles to harps.

Capitol Music in downtown is a wonderful music store. THey carry a good selection of sheet music, from classical to pop to band and choir. There are rooms available to play through pieces before purchase, and if they don't have what you're looking for, the staff will help you to find it in a catalog or online and order it for you, with the option of shipping it to your address. They sell and rent instruments as well as supplies. I have been extremely happy with Capitol Music.

I LOVE coming to this place!! There's a lot of stuff crammed together in a small space and the parking can be difficult, but it's worth coming to check it out if this strikes your interest bone! They have percussion from all over the world - not just the African drums! I also like the fact that they have resources for teachers there (I'm certified to teach music) and instruments for little ones - my nearly 3 year-old has a great collection.

I've used American Music to rent speakers and a sound system before. They're very knowledgeable about what type of system to rent and the prices are pretty decent.

Emerald City Guitars is a crazy shop in Seattle that sells great guitars. They have many used guitars that are awesome. Their prices are slightly higher than other places, but the other places just don't carry as many of these awesome vintage guitars that Emerald City Guitars carries. They are always burning incense in the shop too and they carry various rock oddities.

I recently helped out at a non-profit fund raiser by running their AV setup. Shortly before the presentation was about to being the projector shut off all by itself. It powered back on after a moment, but I was concerned enough to call AV Pro, the folks they rented from, to see if this was a known issue. The employee who answered my call spent more than 15 minutes on the phone with me walking me though troubleshooting ideas. He felt confident that it was probably a glitch in the power (old building) but gave me a cell phone number for someone who was standing by to rush a replacement projector out to our event.
This all seems like it should be standard behavior for a rental service, but we all know it isn't. I was pleasantly surprised by the immediate attention as well as the sincerity of their concern for our event to run smoothly.
I wasn't involved in the rental process, so I can't speak to their equipment selection or prices. But based on their support I'd highly recommend checking them out if you need to rent projectors or sound systems.

The Guitar Emporium is a little high-end acoustic guitar shop in Ballard. The people there are great and the guitars are gorgeous. When I decided to learn to play I looked all over for a teacher - what I wanted was someone who could teach me theory and use sheet music rather than only tabs. I found Bob Crow who gave lessons at the Guitar Emporium (not sure if he's still there, but I'm sure anyone they have is great). He is a trained music instructor and extremely talented musician. The lessons are in the back room (well, more like a closet) and the whole shop will be able to hear you...but don't worry - everyone is very supportive.

Okay, so Seattle is crawling with musicians who all seem to have an insatiable appetite for new gear. And when you're looking for new gear it's hard to resist Guitar Center. They're huge, they're cheap, but they suck! Use them as a last resort.
Petosa may not have everything you're looking for, but they have the important stuff, the good stuff, not the cheap knock-off crap that Guitar Center tries to pass off as pro gear. But the most important reason to go to Petosa is the staff. They actually know what they're talking about and are happy to help you find what's right for you. Huh, that's a bright idea, no?
