Greenwood Hardware is everything you want in a great local hardware store. I just moved to the neighborhood, so I had lots of small projects and supplies to get. How can I fix that cabinet door that came off the hinges? What should I do about all the dandelions in the lawn? How do you bolt something to the wall in case of earthquakes? I was impressed by how friendly and knowledgeable they were, and I always left saying “That’s it? That’s all I have to do? That’s all I have to pay?”

I lived in one of Allen's rental homes. If you live in one of them now.....beware!! If you want anything fixed, good luck!! He tore apart the bathrooms because of a leak about a year into me living there and never repaired it even after the 3 more years that I resided. He never fixed the dishwasher, the garbage disposal, the leaking water heater, etc. He was too lazy to maintain the yard so he put a tarp over the grass. Everytime I requested to get anything fixed, he would tell me he would be there and never show up. I locked my house keys in my car one day and asked if he had a spare, he said no yet I found out in the end after moving that he had a key the whole time. I moved out this past summer and when a went back to get the remainder of my things, he had already cleaned out the house and claimed he took the rest of my belonings and my trash to the dump!! I still had 2 days left to move out!!!!! What an idiot!! I called the cops and he was told that was illegal. I am now in the process of filing a case against him. If he can't even fix repairs in his own homes, what makes you think he will fix anything for someone else? He even ran his buisness behind the home I was renting from him. That's how much of a flake he is!! Do not trust this man!! He will screw you over!!

Pacific Supply Co is the only hardware store in Capitol Hill. I went in there the other day to find a locking door knob for my apartment door (which they did have).
Keep in mind that this store is an apartment and building supply store so the selection of goods is not that great. Its perfect if you break something in your apartment and need a replacement (great for the glass globes surrounding your outdoor lights) but you will not find lumber or a wide range of tile.
Basically if you can find it in your apartment you can find it at Pacific Supply Co.

I used to go to this hardware store all the time when I worked nearby. The staff is helpful if not overly friendly. I found a lot of lightig and painting supplies I needed there.
They also have garden stuff and lots of tools.
The parking can be challenging but they are north of 47th so even though parking is hard on University Ave it's better up at that end.
The prices seemed really reasonable to me.

It may depend on whether you want an integrated sink/vanity or a separate vanity that you drop the sink into, but I do have one suggestion. When we remodeled, we bought a bunch of fixtures (sinks, toilets, faucets, etc.) at the Fixture Gallery on Stone Way. They have a great selection of big-name fixtures. I believe it is open to the public, but they are probably more used to dealing with contractors, so if you have one, have them make an appointment for you and maybe go along.
It is good to have an appointment, because then a salesperson who knows the products will be able to walk around the showroom with you. This sounds obnoxious in principle, but is actually useful, since they'll ask the right questions about your situation and help you pick out something that will work in the space you have. They're not high-pressure salespeople at all.

I had them come clean out my gutters because I was too busy. They did a great job, they cleaned up after they finished, and they left without even bothering me. They told me they would take about 1 hour, and they did exactly to the minute, so I had to tip the guys.

We stopped in at the Lock & Keel this weekend with some friends and got a chance to see a newer side of Ballard. I recall from only 10 years ago what a sleepy little town feel the downtown area had before all of the newer development happened. That, and all the old Ballard jokes. Granted, I like the new stuff too but going out can be a dodgy experience.
Anyhow, we were playing pool and having a beer all the while surveying the very eclectic crowd within the bar. There were lots of tattoos and piercings - which is not a big deal nowadays and is actually standard attire for the 20-something set. I have to say that "Scott from Kent" was certainly airing a lot of testosterone with a lot of that in the form of screaming like a Marine out on his first leave since making it through bootcamp. And he looked like a Marine. Then we had "Andy" who was a soft spoken Sacramento transplant (got here 2 years ago) lamenting the (usual) lack of friendliness of Seattle-ites as he hadn't made hardly any friends or contacts in those two years since he'd moved here. He was certainly doing his best to become a buddy to all of us (we had about 7 of us together) and we did enjoy playing pool with him we just weren't about to invite him over to someone's house late at night after having met only 2 hours earlier.
Then there was the bearded salt-and-pepper haired middle-aged attorney in the flannel button down shirt whose gut hung out the bottom of his layered t-shirt. We found out that he defends child molesters for a living and he was more than happy (unfortunately for us) to share some of his stories about work. Apparently he missed the facial and body language cues that would have clued him in to how disgusted we were by his chosen line of work. We kept trying to get away from him but he just kept coming around. Creepy.
While the venue is big enough to hold a lot of folks and the beer is good you have to keep an eye out on who wants your attention in this bar.

When trying to buy fixtures for our remodel - we looked at best plumbing on Stoneway for both fixture purchase and full house replacement of plumbing lines.
The fixture department refused to even quote us unless we paid a design fee ( despite the fact we were not getting them to do a design).
Eventually we choose a different retailer and plumbing installation company.
