I was thrilled to discover City People’s several years ago as a non-chain resource for garden tools and other hardware. When, only a few years later, "True Value" appeared on their sign, I was devastated. However, there’s more to avoiding chains than keeping large corporations from running independent stores out of business; there’s also the personal aspect. If you simply can’t stand the soul-draining experience of shopping at Eagle and Home Depot, City People’s is a wonderful alternative.
[Added after reading Latife’s review:]
Clearly this store is not the answer for everyone! Admittedly, I haven’t shopped here in several months, but I know exactly what Latife means about the kind of staff that frowns on your every move. I’m sorry to hear about this and only hope these employees will be replaced by others who make the customers feel more welcome—or else by a management that provides an atmosphere in which employees and customers are all much happier.

I had limited time to run into Morgan's and pick out a wide spread faucet. The Morgan's salesman immediately asked the type I wanted and my budget. I said old-timey chrome and he took me to their sale section which actually had what I wanted. Score!

If my dad were alive today, he'd take me to Tweedy and Popp. Not because it's big or has every item, but because he'd know the people who worked there and would visit them so often, people would mistake him for an employee. So in honor of the days when I went to hardware stores with my dad, I go to Tweedy and Popp. They have paint, garden stuff, plumbing stuff, they make keys, and they have Dremel bits. Plus the people are SO NICE it's ridiculous.

This place is an absolute wonderland for people who love home improvement. I have been in the stages of moving this month and have found this store a great resource. It offers everything from plants to decorate to the flooring to put them on. Everyone who works there really seems to be helpful and they don't try to pressure you into buying anything. I would derfinitely recommend this store to anyone who is looking to give your house a facelift.

I've never actually bought their paint, but Restoration Hardware has some lovely paints. Many of their colors match the craftsman homes of this area. I love their colors and they appear to give a nice gloss. I don't know about wear & tear etc, but I know that if I do ever own a home I'd buy their paints. Plus, they are open both Saturday and Sunday.

Used to be great, but lately they rarely seem to have staff available to check out. Sometimes I do like to use the self-checkout but it's maddening to use when there are multiple items.
It also took 3 visits to install a microwave last time. I will not buy any more appliances from them. Long story but beware the incompetent delivery installers. In store staff are ok so I don't get why they don't keep the front staffed. I've been going less, despite prices, because of that.

This is one of a dying breed of mom-and-pop hardware stores...and it may not be here much longer, now that Queen Anne Avenue IS becoming very gentrified.
There is a very honest approach. If they may be a little wary, maybe it's because they know they are being squeezed out by all the "hip" stuff..
Had a key made here, the proprietress was decent and friendly. More like a local store in a Midwest town. A hardware store has been at this location since 1932...
Wish I had more opportunity to buy things here. Actually, I found some sticky fly paper here in 2 minutes' worth time, after having looked at Bartell's, etc. It was SO easy to find!
What's nice is, unlike the elephantine ("airplane-hangar") approach of Fred Meyer, Home & Depot, Eagle Hardware, etc., you have here a store of a MANAGEABLE size, not stuffed to the gills with "stuff" you'd never use. And I didn't feel I was lost in a huge mass of people, a feeling that makes me avoid, now, bigger stores (most of downtown included).
Unlike "bigger is better" mind-set of most American retail, here you DON'T have to wade through miles of aisles packed from bottom to top, desperately searching for "a needle in a haystack."
I don't need to choose from 20 different kinds of a generic commodity--in fact, I don't want it at all! I need "basics" more often than the VAST MAJORITY of the things I find in large chain-stores.
I always ENJOYED going to City People's Mercantile on 15th Ave. E. on Capitol Hill before it was replaced by a soul-less, boring, tacky (but practical, albeit, with low prices) Walgreen's.
Prices are very decent for such a small store.
Good selection of hardware, "preselected."
This "Mom-and-Pop" store is so idiosyncratic that the last time I went in I heard some wonderful Baroque (classical) music being played. Not muzak, and not your usual soul/rap or rock...They're definitely NOT doing things just to go along with the contemporary mass culture around them.
And it's of more use, to me at least, than the tanning salon or nail trimming outfit in the new "hip" office building next door.
Hooray for the Mom-and-Pop store!
Also recommend the hardware store on McGraw & 6th W. Queen Anne is lucky NOT to have dinosaur-style Eagle-inspired hardware stores.

As one of the only local independent hardware stores in the area, Madison Park Hardware is a little gem.
The service is helpful without being overbearing (if they see you circling the aisles they will ask if you need help.)
Though a small hardware store can't compete with the big box chain stores, the selection is good, with everything from mousetraps to canning jars to sand toys for the kids.
A great store when you just need to get a quick bottle of wood glue or some steel wool, with reasonable prices too.

I dont know what Corrine is talking about but she must believe everything she hears. Home Depot is a wonderland of home repair. Selection is second to none! However with selection comes grades of quality. If you are cheap you can get that. You peeps know who you are! If you step up and want high grade you get that too for less than the other guys. All under one roof. I love this place.

They are always very helpful everytime I come in. They don't make you feel bad if you don't know how to do something they just help you along with your project. Whenever, I need to fix something I go over there and talk to them first to get an idea of what to do before I call a professional.
They also have some cool hard to find items such as dutch ovens and other pots and pans. The store itself is kind of small especially compared to the Home Depot but the staff is more readly available. Plus I like to support the little guy.
