I first went to the World Spice Merchant looking for ingredients for a medieval recipe I was trying to make. They have *everything*! I especially like their pre-blended spices. Some of my favourites are the Mayan cocoa with chili powder, the Japanese rice seasonings, and the Pacific seafood rub. Spice really *does* bring variety to life!

If you want fresh seafood, Wild Salmon Seafood Market is a great choice. Much of what they sell is right off the fishing boats at Fisherman's Terminal and everything I have bought has been fresh and good. The guys are helpful in giving recommendations for cooking and are always willing to suggest what is best and fresh at the moment. Their prices seem very reasonable, especially given the fact that the quality of their fish is so much better than anything you'd find in a supermarket.

If you're willing to splurge, and want a REALLY good cake, I highly suggest Whole Foods' bakery on Roosevelt. They've done a great job for me on custom cakes before. They're esp. good if you love high quality chocolate cakes or cakes for those with special dietary needs. The staff are always helpful, and if you give them a few days or a week's notice, they're able to whip up something extraordinary.
Hope this helps!

I LOVE Village Market Thriftway!
It is a little bit more expensive than the competitors around but they also offer a large selection of natural and organic produce and other grocery items.
They have a great cheese and olive bar, a well stocked and more upscale deli than most, a gorgeous fresh meats and seafoods department (especially considering the size of the store) plus everything else that one looks for when they are shopping in general. They have unique sundries, a decent wine and beer selection, lots of gift wrapping ideas and wares. Just a lot of eye catching, cool things in one place.
The staff is always friendly and when they have free food samples at the deli or fresh meats section, the samples are interesting things like coconut shrimp instead of cut up Hot Pockets or burrito bites>.<
What impresses me most is that they truly seem to have an equal or greater representation of organic, natural and whole foods than most places. The mainstream 'norm' isn't at Thriftway. You can buy unsulphered coconut shreds, candied rose petals and violets, gourmet salts from all around the world and many other unique items along with the regular toilet paper.
I could go on and on but I love this store!

I cook a lot of Thai food, and Viet Wah is by far my favourite place to shop for ingredients. Their veggies are always good and fresh, their seafood (while it may look less enticingly presented) is excellent, and their dried good selection has some hard-to-find stuff. Most of the time their prices are very cheap vs. Uwajimaya.
I used to enjoy shopping at the old Uwajimaya downtown. The ambiance was always great, and I felt like I was in another country sometimes. The new one has good selection, but it feels too "Whole Foods" and less authentic somehow. Viet Wah brought back what I used to love about the old Uwajimaya.
To give you an example of prices... I bought Rainier Cherries at both Whole Foods and Viet Wah in the last 2 weeks. At Whole Foods, I paid (foolish me), $9.99 a pound. At Viet Wah, I paid $1.29 a pound!!
I've also stopped buying seafood at Whole Foods and shop at Viet Wha for it - the quality of things like shrimp and fish is FAR superior. I've had very inconsistent experiences from WF.
Oh - added bonus. The Tamarind Tree restaurant is in the same parking lot, if you're feeling peckish :)

Kat and Alex turned me on to this place. Oh my lordy. I get so darn excited when I get to go there it's not even funny. Delicous cupcakes made with REAL ingredients. I actually like the Babycakes better than the regular ones, as they are so rich that a lil' dab'll do ya. Yeah, they're not cheap but MY, they're tasty

More
I'm concerned that the novelty of a cupcake in a coffee shop has gotten my fellow Seattleites all goofy in the head. Yes, cupcakes are fun. Yes, cupcakes are tasty. But building an entire enterprise around selling $1.75 cupcakes cannot be sustained. On two occassions I have had unsatisfactory coffee experiences -- one at the Magnolia location (my coffee has kind of old and kind of cold) and one at the new Ballard location (even though i was clearly staying put for a while, i was served a very substandard $2.00 cappucino in a paper cup -- when there were plenty of clean ceramic cups available -- since it was late and dude didn't want to clean a dirty saucer). Yeah, the cupcakes are kind of cutesy and taste ok - but if you are craving a delightful baked dessert treat, there are numerous other local options: Essential Baking, which is open until 10, has unbelieveable selection of pastries, cookies, treats, and baked goods -- and they all rock. Dahlia Lounge will serve you a heaping slice of their signature coconut cream pie until 11. (Yes, it's more than a cupcake - but it is a graduate school dessert compared to Veritas' middle-school cupcakes). Top Pot Donuts classic chocolate glazed cake donut costs 30% less than a Veritas cupcake at $1.19 per, and you get a far superior cakey sugar treat.<br>I know some of the ladies out there won't agree with me here.... go ahead, try out the place if you want. It's big and cavernous and all they sell is expensive tiny cakes and non-impressive slightly expensive coffee drinks. It's a cute idea - but on execution they are bested by numerous established players in the coffee-and-dessert/bakery/Zoka category all over town. I suspect that like the baby blue Tiffany's box, Veritas will continue selling many to-go orders of cupcakes in their hot pink cardboard boxes due to the sudden "cachet" that such a purchase has gained here in town. But much like Tiffany's, you're paying more for what's in the box just for the brand name. Don't get my wrong - I love locally owned businesses that are doing well. I just think they can do better.

I had not realized this before I discovered Urban Vines, but the next best thing to the neighborhood bar just may be the neighborhood wine shop. With its exposed brick walls, boutiquey wines & beers, friendly owners, abundant tastings, and dog-friendly atmosphere, Urban Vines is a cozy place in the heart of Mt. Baker where you can sip some wine with the neighbors and feel like a regular. No pressure to know anything about varietals or to make a big investment, Urban Vines is that unique shop that has really cool wines -- and for as low as $10 -- but with none of the attitude. Also, you don't feel like a schmuck if you hang out for a while and drink some of their wine.
