We strongly recommend Maruta Japanese grocery and deli.
We fave traveled world wide, to include southern Japan. Its small Mom and Pop style of grogery and deli reminds us very much of the Japanese culture. It has all that anyone could want and very convenient with free parking.

This store is great. Small, but packed inside is everything a Japanese person would need to feel right at home.
If you can't afford to visit Japan, go check out Maruta

Run by a team of Japanese women with an obvious passion for good Japanese Food, Maruta is the foodie's alternative to Uwajimaya. Beyond just being cheaper, Maruta is also more authentic. Their lunch counter offers excellent, freshly made Japanese meals at a price you can't pass up. Before 12noon, they have their "special of the day" at an even better price - a full meal for less than five bucks! Fresh, fresh sashimi and sushi platters at supermarket prices means that you can have an indulgent exotic sashimi party without breaking the bank .

It's definitely not as elegant as Uwajimaya, and not as large, but it definitely does not cater to the same clientèle. Maruta Shoten is in the "industrial" district, and its demographic is "blue collar" -- they don't need fancy decor, but they do want to see attention to what is practical. And it is definitely Asian! They carry some things that people who think that they understand Asian cuisine (by virtue of frequenting Chinese restaurants in America) will not recognize.

This place in Georgetown has a lot of the same Japanese groceries you can find at Uwajimaya, but often times it's cheaper here. They also have lots of deli items and pre-packed "o-bento" Japanese lunch boxes, and serve Chinese steam table fare to go for lunch. if you stop by around 5pm before they close, they mark down all the o-bento - it's a great way to get real Japanese food for a bargain. It's a tiny place so they can't possibly carry everthing Uwajimaya does, but still most of the basics are offered here.
