Another organization I would recommend is Westside Baby, in West Seattle. They provide clothes, toys, diapers, cribs, car seats, and other essential baby equipment to needy children and families in the West Seattle and White Center neighborhoods. Seattle Works! aims to get young adults (20s and 30s) involved in the community on a variety of different levels to prepare them for increased civic leadership in their later years. Seattle Works! activities run a huge gamut from their core TeamWorks concept of creating small groups to do one community service proect per month for several months to a number of civic dialogue events, often held at local brewhouses. Seattle Works! has become well-established and often functions quite well, but not without the hiccups common to non-profits. As a former teamworks participant, I can say that I had a great time and enjoyed most of my service. Team Works can definitely be a great place to meet other young people who share your ideals as well.

It is a terrific place if you can get in as there is literally a decade long wait list:-) or more important know folks who are members. They have really renovated the place over the last twenty years. It is a private club, so it is invite only, but the Olympic size pool is heated in the winter. The hot tub is great. They have a couple of restaurants and of course a mountain of tennis courts.
The big event is of course the tournament every summer. Since tennis whites are required, it looks like Wimbleton in the days of old rather than today's Opens that are more like grungefests imho.
Altogether the lawn dinners are wonderful. What relaxed country lifestyle should be like minutes from Seatt.e

This drop-in for street youth is run by the church but offers a very open-minded space for the youth to be in. Serving homeless youth in the U-District from the age of 13-23yrs, the staff is helpful, connected and caring. I found this organization to be a good introduction to the needs of the homeless community.

Seattle is fairly dull architecturally. So it was a more than welcome surprise to see our old concrete box of a library replaced with the beautiful, modern new Rem Koolhas designed work of art. The building is fun and interesting to explore. Rooms and corridors, even the restrooms, are filled with color and shape and light. The entire building showers visitors with light and airy views of downtown and the sound. Plus, it will make your kids think the library is the coolest place to be.

Well, its a loaded question. Why not? After all, open your mind. My wife went to Carmine Burana (sp.) a few years back at the Seattle Opera as an example. It was completely awesome.
She hasn't been back since, so I'm not sure if she is a life long convert, but an accessible opera like this makes sense (as opposed to 20 hours of the Ring :-)

My wife and I took classes at the Seattle Academy of Fine Art two years ago. They have an outstanding program, with an emphasis on realism. You will learn how to "see" in a new way and how to tranform what you are seeing into visually recognizable drawings of great detail.
Margaret Davidson taught the beginning drawing classes we took - she was wonderful. You'll also find a class full of dedicated and motivated students who are a pleasure to be with.
The school's web site is:
http://www.seattlefineart.org/
For a sample of what I learned in "Foundation I" drawing class, see my web site:
