Praise allah that we now have a qualified alternative to the evil green machine (not that there aren't some fine local roasteries and all) - but peet's is the gear - great flavor and complexity, and not evil to boot. If you drink coffee and want to be on the side of truth and justice, get it here.

This has been the biggest restaurant surprise of the summer for us. This little place (tucked behind the Blue ??? pub right off Stoneway) is a feast for the eyes and the belly. The decor is just as the name states, bizzare. The food is fresh, homemade pasta and deeeelish (also great salads, a good wine list and according to my husband, "some of the best homemade tiramisu around"). The staff are also a crew of hilarious, fun-loving warm people that make you feel like you are part of the family. Head over there when you get the chance- you'll be back again and again.

Sambar is adjacent to Ballard's hidden gem, Le Gourmand, and is in fact run by the same owners. Sambar is tiny, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in a hip atmosphere. I've eaten there a half dozen times and haven't had a bad meal yet. Sambar specializes in cocktails and even if you profess to not like them, Sambar will break down your resolve. The menu is small and portions are appetizer-sized – perfect noshing. Order a few off the menu and be sure to listen for specials as they usually reflect something wonderful cooking in the adjacent French restaurant. Also, Sambar is open late: to midnight, M-Th, and to 2am on Fri and Sat.

From the moment you drive to the front door, the restaurant treats you to a wonderful experience. A terrific decor, valet parking, friendly servers, and attentive staff & management make for a great evening.
They have a complete wine list and liquor list - including rare and expensive cognacs and scotches. They also have excellent local wines and you may happen to meet some of the winemakers here as well!
The Seafood Bacchanalia is a nice mix of crab, lobster, fish, shrimp, etc. For the price, the food is good, but not the best. It's the experience here that really rounds out the restaurant, though. They do have several excellent appetizers, though, like the lobster bisque and the specialty salads. I also like their lamb; better beef steaks can be had elsewhere for the price.
Dessert is excellent. Great restaurant.

Little Thai is without a doubt my favorite Thai restaurant - all because of their excellent seafood dishes. Unlike most local Thai places, which limit their seafood selection to "prawns", they also have mussels, scallops, and wonderful baked fish dishes. They also have decent service, the atmosphere isn't unpleasent, and prices are about $20 - 25 for a meal for two. But it's the food which sells this place.
If you don't like seafood, try the Masala Curry. It's the only thing my fiance ever gets there. Personally, I recommend the baked fish - you will have about eight different choices. There is an excellent selection of beef, chicken, and vegetarian food as well. For a beverage, their Thai tea is excellent - I ask them to make mine with coconut milk instead of half-and-half.

More
The Dome Room is located in the Arctic Building, downtown, on the corner or 3rd and Cherry. It is a banquet room that can handle over 200 people and has an antique glass domed ceiling that lights up. The dome is the highlight of the room and provides an art deco like, classy, ambiance. I had my wedding there, and with the dance floor in the middle of the room under the dome and all the tables surrounding it, you can't help but have a great time. There is also an attached area with large windows at one end that has room for buffet and extra dinner tables and a bar. I?ve looked at many different types of banquet type rooms and this one is in the low to mid price range. Arrangements are made with Tony's Catering, and you can use them as a caterer for your event or not. It gets a little pricey if you don't go with them (lots of add on charges). We chose to use them and really liked the food. Another plus is that you bring your own alcohol, which is a HUGE savings over many banquet/catering/hotel options. The feel of the room is what makes this such a great spot for weddings, parties, or banquets. I highly recommend it!

... then head on over to Prost mini-beer-hall on Phinney Ridge for some absolutely delectable german beers on tap and a big plate of sauerkraut. They have such a killer slow-roasted pork tenderloin and kraut with Rye bread - i can't remember what it's called but they have it available on Thursday nights only and it's so good. And they have all these delicious german beers - including the Spaten optimator, which will knock you on your butt if you drink two of those gigantic steins they serve them in there. A great place to drink, eat gas-inducing stewed cabbage, and just make merry. FYI< "Prost" is the german equivalent of "Skol" to the swedes. Get there before 9 though, or you'll be gazing longingly at all the full tables and benches. SEe you there next Thursday.
