By December 1, 2008, Andersons will have been sold to two young fellows who will very likely try to change the way the gym operates. Rumor has it that the emphasis will change from family-oriented (no more child care) and “middle aged” (and much older!) atheletes to the young, “hip”, grunting, spandex crowd. The perks that are now part of membership (personal training, classes, etc) will reportedly require payment. The current wonderful staff (not on commission) will apparently be replaced by better look

My husband and I were members for at least 3 years at this gym. We traded in all the amenities of larger gyms for the convenience of a location near our home. However, when we tried to cancel our membership for the summer (we were planning on coming back after the sunny weather waned) they ended up charging us for TWO FULL MONTHS after cancellation and THEN refused to refund our money! Needless to say, we will not be going back in the fall and will now trade convenient location for more machines, more classes, a nicer atmosphere and dare I say.......a pool?!?! If the customer service isn't better at this Mom N Pop gym, what's the point?

Anderson's isn't one of those gyms full of posturing hardbodies admiring themselves in ubiquitous mirrors. The atmosphere is laid-back, and the staff and customers are friendly without being in your face. Sure, you'll occasionally see some dude dramatically grunting his way through a set, or chatting up a young woman who's doing her best to politely ignore him, but it's the exception here rather than the rule.
Another big plus is that it's a family-owned business with some history in the community, not a cog in some corporate conglomerate with a hard-sell marketing plan.
The only major beef I have with Anderson's is that they aren't open Saturday and Sunday evenings. (They close at 5 or 6.)

The longstanding gym in the village area on the east side of Greenlake is well worth the fitness jog to get there from Wallingford. The place is simply professional, mellow and occasionally fun, serving a wide range of ages and appearances. The longer-time staff members show considerable caring and interaction with we who are sweating. Coaching or instruction is readily available. And they seem to have expanded the number of membership/payment plans, so let 'em know what works best for you. Second best for convenience to Wallingford would be the U-District YMCA, on 50th. Depending on your Wallingford location, that too might be a fine fitness jaunt before working out.
