Seriously?!?!?!?!?!?!!!! There is actually a sign up now that says "You must stay towel dry on the machines... do not let your sweat drip onto and into the machine" Then it goes on to some stupid explanation of how it's bad for the machines and hard to maintain them when people are dripping sweat all over the place.
How the **** am I supposed to not sweat on a step mill? I train for hiking on that and am sweating after 10 minutes. What? Am I supposed to turn off my sweat glands temporarily or something?
How about this? Take the $150 I wasted on my joining fee and hire someone to clean the equipment once in a while. That's a novel idea.
I can't get over this. It's a gym... people sweat!!
This place is way to uppity for me, I'm out.
Pros: big, view
Cons: service, price, extra fees

My wife works out at Sound Mind & Body Gym here in Fremont and loves it, I checked it out the other day and was impressed by the location (right on the water in Fremont), the friendly staff, and the free weights. I've never taken a class here, but the wife thinks the trainers do a great job with any skill level. Thinking about ditching Anytime Fitness close by to come work out here - better atmosphere.
Pros: Friendly, Fast
Cons: Not a "social" gym

I got to the point where I would ignore the fact that the people who work there were super rude and snooty and the owner is a complete miserable hag. I joined this gym about a year ago because they had a steam room. The steam room was the deciding factor. Less than a week after I joined, the steam room broke down and was never fixed. They told me that they would be starting a big renovation soon so I should just be patient. So during the summer while I was waiting for the new and improved steam room, the membership coordinator and one of the personal trainers would bother me nonstop while I was at the gym and one of them got my phone number from the database and started to call me and text me incessantly to the point of stalking. When the renovations were finally finished, there was no new steam room, just a new sauna and I really don't like saunas. So I joined for the steam room and I only got to use it twice last April. A waste of a lot of money and an invasion of my confidential personal information.
Pros: Great view
Cons: rude people, too expensive, no steam room

June 14th, 2003: SMB Gym in Fremont shut down the last stretching room in the gym in order to use it to store it's junk equipment.
June 23rd, 2003: I submitted five comment cards from five different people suggesting that the room be cleared of equipment and reserved as a stretching room.
June 24th, 2003: I received a phone call from Victoria Aldrich a co-owner. She said the room will remain full of equipment and that members could either stretch in the Yoga room or in the hallway upstairs. Unfortunately the Yoga room always has classes during peak gym hours and the hallway is, uh... a hallway.
June 25th, 2003: the room had three more large pieces of equipment in it.
June 25th, 2003: I began a petition to have the room cleared of junk equipment and converted back into a stretching room.
June 25th, 2003: I am expelled from SMB for gathering Seventy three members signatures for The Member's Petition for a Stretching Room.
Co-owners Richard Harrington and Dennis Rose approached me before I had a chance to submit this petition.
Richard: "Is that a petition? Well,...it's not gonna happen!" Richard used the phrase "It's not gonna happen!" nine times in the course of a four minute conversation.
Richard: "I'll give you to the count of ten to either take a refund to your membership [at this gym] or stop your petition [to have a dedicated stretching room]."
I wanted to finish my work out so I told Richard what he wanted to hear. Ten minutes later I saw Victoria Aldrich in the gym and made an attempt at a rational and professional conversation concerning the voice of seventy-three of it's members.
Victoria: "You need to find something better to do with your time."
Victoria: "I don't want to have anything to do with you."
Victoria: "This is not a democracy"
Victoria: "Get your stuff and get out."

I just cancelled my membership and am kicking myself for the money I paid for the initiation fee. I can honestly say that the owner is the most miserable woman I have ever interacted with. She basically yelled at me when I mentioned how dirty the locker rooms were and I have heard her yelling at her staff in front of members. I am embarrassed I gave these people business. They dont care about how they treat their paying customers. Do yourself a favor and stay away. There are so many better gyms in town.
PS. A few of the spinning classes are good but the rest are average at best. Kickboxing is just an inexperienced girl jumping around. She has no formal training.
Pros: great view, great equipment
Cons: SERVICE, classes, price, parking

SMB is located in a nice spot on the ship canal in Fremont and has excellent views. The trainers available there are personable and very knowledgeable. Unfortunately, they have several staff members who are unfriendly and one owner who is quite rude. Given the relatively high cost of a membership there, good customer service should be included.

Being pregnant I had to freeze my account for 6 months. I wasn't told that I still would be charged a ''freeze" fee of $15 a month. Being on a freeze for medical reasons cost me more than canceling my membership and re-joining when capable of coming back!
I talked to the owner, Vicky, and she is just rude, unhelpful and not accommodating. She refuses any refund as I should have know by reading the website (while I talked to 3 different staff members and was NEVER told about any future charges!).
I will not recommend this place to anyone.
