Locally-owned fabric stores are an endangered species, but we have one of the coolest right here in Seattle. I've been shopping at Nancy's for years and maybe took it for granted a little. It's a great resource for lovely fabrics, ribbons, and notions, especially hard-to-find ones. I've always had great service, and after waiting in line at a chain store to 1) get my fabric cut then 2) pay at the one register open in a huge store, I appreciate the staff at Nancy's.

I bought some really sweet buttons at Nancy's but needed many more than they had on hand; they told me to call them anytime and order what I needed and they would get them. I called in an order for a dozen cards of buttons which were $2 per card with 2 buttons on each card. Well when I got there to pick up my buttons they brought them to me, not on their original cards but loose in a small plastic bag. That in itself was no big deal until I got home and realized that they had written on the bag $1.25 and had charged me and extra .25¢ per button adding an extra $6 to my bill! What a dirty trick, now I knew why they had removed the buttons from the card, so they could charge me more. I have a small business making childrens knits and need a lot more buttons in the future, Nancy's Sewing basket can bet I will not order from them again. One thing I will not tolerate is dishonesty.

I love the fabrics at Nancy's and I go there often. Their fabrics are without a doubt the best in Seattle. They have beautiful wools, cottons, linens & silks, but not a lot of synthetics. They have terrific notions as well, quality sewing tools that can be very hard to find. --- I read some complaints about the staff, but I've never encountered rudeness. They do leave you alone, but I think they figure that you are browsing & will ask for help if you want it. I have called them several times to find relatively inexpensive notions & they have always been helpful. In person, some of them are gregarious and others are serious & more off putting. It would be crazy to miss the incredible fabrics because the staff feel a little cool!
Pros: Beautiful fabrics, excellent notions
Cons: Pricey, but worth it.

Being a sewing newbie, I heard that Nancy's was the place to go for great "notions" and to get assistance picking fabrics, etc. Unfortunately, instead of help I received a harried salesperson waving her arm in a general direction telling me that the "knit fabrics are over there." She actually cut me off as I was trying to explain and show her the pattern I had brought with me. This was after I stood at the counter for a few minutes patiently waiting for help, to no avail (there was no one else waiting for help at the counter -- the workers managed to studiously ignore me until I vocalized my request for help). The woman who cut my fabric was unpleasant. I received nary a smile from anyone there. It could have been because it was a busy Saturday (still, not that many customers), but they managed to make me feel like a total annoyance. The fabrics were very pretty and they had a wonderful variety, but I'll never go to Nancy's again.
Pros: really pretty stuff
Cons: attitude of staff, traffic on queen anne ave

If you just want some cheap stuff, go someplace else, but if you're looking for unique, interesting, and colorful fabrics, then this is the place. I'm making my wedding dress and am reconsidering fabrics cause I saw so many awesome ones at Nancy's.

Their selection of silk dupioni fabric was very wide, and I was able to find exactly what I was looking for. They also offer a bridal discount, which was very much appreciated since I was buying almost 20 yards of expensive fabric!
I'll definitely be back.

Be careful when you enter Nancy's, you'll suddenly come up with all these projects you want to complete. You'll NEED the beautiful silks and ribbons. Maybe don't bring your wallet in the first go-round.
The fabrics are beautiful. Great place to find bridal lace and other special occasion fabrics.
The ribbons and flowers, all in their special room, are to die for. There are vintage ribbons that are fun just to look at.
If you need something special for your project, you'll find it at Nancy's.

Home of a ribbon room, Nancy's Sewing Basket is amazing. Filled with fabric and notions, the store is a textural wonderland. You'll find nearly everything you want, let alone can imagine. Their assortment of ribbon is astounding...after all, it's in its own room! It's a store where you will never see everything they have to offer, yet you won't feel too crowded, either. They carry everything from purse handles to buttons, enabling one to pick up all the supplies for a project Saturday morning and end the weekend with a new creation.
